    Very sad. Victor was a long-standing and prolific contributor to
    Language Log and as far as I could tell a supremely competent
    sinologist. The breadth and depth of his knowledge of all things
    concerning the Chinese language family was staggering. It was him
    who coined the term "topolect" for the subdivisions of Chinese.
