• Impassible Roads in Iceland

    From joegwinn@joegwinn@comcast.net to sci.electronics.design on Thu Jun 18 20:05:36 2026

There are roads going upland to the top of the local glacier that are
marked as "Impassible" in Icelandic. They really mean it.

When my wife and I were in Iceland, there were stories in the local English-language newspapers giving the story of a French family that
drove by such a sign not realizing what it meant. They had to be
rescued by a specialized armored vehicle from large rocks being blown
off the glacier. Their car was abandoned, totally destroyed.

OK, and what does this have to do with "electronics"?

Don't be a lurker. Post something interesting about electronics.

It is fun to sit in the tent near the murmuring glacial stream
and advice a friend & customer on circuit improvements.
A Dell XPS13 always fits into the motorcycle bags and Internet
is excellent there, even in the desert.
I should have done that more often.

Designing outdoors is actually productive. It shakes up categories.

Of course one is left wondering how a road in Iceland possesses an
attribute exclusive to God (impassibility, i.e. God cannot be acted upon).

    Devious folk, these vikings.

Intermittent impassibility would seem to be less than divine. Car-sized
rocks can be blown into smaller chunks and eventually moved on.

One letter, a whole different meaning. OK, the road was impassable.
An example of why classical languages and etymology should still be
