• Who's the real World Cup all time top scorer?

    From Mark@Pammiesheart@yahoo.co.uk to rec.sport.soccer on Thu Aug 13 17:36:23 2026

If you exclude the extended inter-confederation play-off and just count
it from the last 32 onwards, who's the real all-time top scorer in the
    World Cup?

If I remember correctly Lionel Messi has 6 less goals and Kylian Mbappe
    has 4 less goals.

You can't do it like this. As there were World Cup Finals with only 13 teams, you'd have to count goals only from when there were 13 or less
    teams left in the competition.

Makes more sense to count all the goals from all the final
tournaments, regardless of the number of participants.

    Tchau!

To Mark: if those numbers are correct, then therein lies your answer:
Mbapp|- with 18 goals. The previous record holder, Klose, had 16, all
    scored in 32-team tournaments. However...

...I agree with Jesus here. You can't really do it like this.

Makes more sense to compute the average goals per game from all the
final tournaments, regardless of the number of participants, maybe
setting a minimum number of games played, i.e. excluding Ernest Otto Wilimowski ;o)

    Correct.

It's quite simple: The real all-time top World Cup goal scorer
is the person who scores the most goals in a World Cup Finals
    tournament.

It is what it is. There is no need to over-complicate it.

I think I've got to agree with everyone, especially you. All time top
scorer is rather a meaningless statistic now, but it wouldn't make much
sense to just ignore the 1st round. Average number of goals per game
would be a far more meaningful statistic.

Should we include the qualifiers anyway? Maybe it would make sense to
include the qualifiers; they are part of the World Cup.

Anyone got any idea what a list of the top scorers would look like if
we did average number of goals per match?

Btw who's Ernest Otto Wilimowski? Or did you just make that name up?

Legendary Polish striker of the 1930s. He scored four goals in
Poland's first round 6-5 loss to Brazil in the 1938 World Cup. So, his
World Cup record stands at 1 appearance, 4 goals, at an average of 4
goals per game[*]. Difficult to believe it will ever be beaten.

[*] The match went to extra time, so it's 4 goals in 120 minutes, but
    still...
