Well, this group is a shadow of what it once was 20 years

share something that I just observed.
In fairness, a lot of newsgroups are only shadows of what
they were twenty years ago...
I watched a good deal of this great WC in bars with
large TVs, but it was often hard to follow the action in
detail. The players looked tiny. I began to wonder about
something. I have a very large archive of matches going back
to 1970, and I took out one from 1998 and one from 1978, and
they confirmed my suspicions.
I noticed something similar not that long ago... ITV4 have been
showing re-runs of "The Big Match" with episodes covering games
from the mid-1970's - early 1980's... the pitches look shit,
compared to today's lawn like surfaces, but the footage was
indeed more 'zoomed'.
The 4:3 format looks quite dated now too... but it possibly
helped the cameramen focus on the action.
PS: Brian Moore was brilliant!
