They've played more "top" teams to get to the final so deserve it more
on that level, that's for sure.

I just hope the ref won't allow play to degenerate like in England -
    Argentina.

Again, Arg. should have seen 3 or 4 cards, last one for a foul from
behind at Yamal. It's not like in the semi, yet.

Not quite like in the dirty semi but not clean either. Spain did their
share of fouls from behind but Argentina considerably more. They did
see one card, for a foul that didn't strike me as being worse than
    others.

Football-wise, not much. Spain maybe 2 minor chances, Arg. I remember
just one half chance. Hopefully the second half will bring more.

Finally the first real chance. A header for Spain from close range

I think Spain should have had a penalty too in the play immediately

Anyway, things got a little bit animated. Spain begin to press. (But

Another huge chance for Spain, a header that goes out by a few inches.
Argentia clearly playing for PKs, just did a defensive substitution.

Spain also get awa with a very clear yellow.

They need to properly call fouls and cards, then we'll see as many
    goals as in the UCL.

final so deserve it more on that level, that's

    Go Spain!

Again, Arg. should have seen 3 or 4 cards, last one
for a foul from behind at Yamal. It's not like in the
    semi, yet.

    0 - 0 at half time.

Not quite like in the dirty semi but not clean either.
Spain did their share of fouls from behind but Argentina considerably more. They did see one card, for a foul
that didn't strike me as being worse than others.

Football-wise, not much. Spain maybe 2 minor chances,
Arg. I remember just one half chance. Hopefully the
    second half will bring more.

Finally the first real chance. A header for Spain from
close range after a Yamal cross. Unfortunatly not well
placed and the keeper gets it.
I think Spain should have had a penalty too in the play immediately before that.

Anyway, things got a little bit animated. Spain begin to
press. (But the last 20 minutes are coming and judging
from what happened so far, Arg. could suddenly start
    showing something else.)

Spain are playing with their chances. It might come back to
    haunt them.

And IMO Fuentes shouldn't have subbed Dani Olmo.

Added time, E. Fernandez out, second yellow for a hit on
    Cubarsi's ankle.
    Quite fitting.

    End of 90 minutes, still 0 - 0.
Spain with a last big chance, excellent FK by Yamal but Martinez
    saves well.
Spain will have one extra man in ET.

They've just showed that Spain had 16 attempts of which 11 on
target. Argentina a grand total of 0.
But the score is still 0 - 0.

Now Williams has a goal cancelled for a previous foul on the keeper.
Not quite sure but looks right.

Another huge chance for Spain, a header that goes out by a few inches. Argentia clearly playing for PKs, just did a defensive substitution.

Spain also get awa with a very clear yellow.

    Mini-break.
In the last minutes play has become very dirty, the ref lets it happen.
It's Argentina's way of getting to PKs (where they are vaforites). I'm
    afraid that's what will happen.

Argentina seem to have an unfortunate tendency of getting to World Cup
finals then either not turning up or playing anti-football in the final
(not in 2022, no, but in 1990, 2014 and 2026).

It's a shame because if they'd played more positively they had the
players to have made this is a much better match.

Now let's forget about all this and admire this incredible Spain team.
Euro and World champs at the same time, thoroughly outplayed all its

The friends I was watching the game with thought that the ref should
have applied stricter standards for second yellow. But the truth is
that Enzo, Paredes and others are always playing on the edge, and

Thank you FF for the updates. I feel like I'm more happy for Argentina not winning (deservedly) than Spain winning (deservedly). The shythousing was really off the scale at this match, and it does well compare to the other recent finals that Arg lost (1990 and 2014 specifically). I feel that the ref gave yellows that he absolutely had to, but realistically Paredes would and should have been off much sooner. The regular time goal should have been at least Var checked, and if it was, it would/should have been allowed to stand.

I do feel that Arg would have won on penalties if the game went that far, and that would have been the first penalty final to go very much against the run of play. The other penalty finals were sort of 50/50 in terms of who "deserved" to win it.

Thankfully, the better team did win, fair and square. IMHO I have had enough of the "street smart"/"dark arts" of the Arg team. They have very talented players, but I just feel I've had enough of the dirty play.

Spain have a solid future ahead of them.

As for Messi, I actually hope that he sticks around in internation football - WC at the age 43? Would be something to watch. Just without the dirty play please.

    Spain-France was the true final.

In retrospect, Spain-Cape Verde was the true final 8)

    2026 FIFA World Cup Final

    Spain v Argentina

The 2010 World Cup winners Spain against the 1978, 1986 and 2022 World
    Cup winners Argentina.

And in the event, Spain played better and won, 1-0.

Should have been 2-0 but perhaps VAR wasn't working.

Thank fuck the right team won.

Hard to argue with that. Very poor final from Argentina: not a
surprise that that they would mostly sit back, but being so completely toothless upfront (for 110 minutes) was unexpected.

But again, that's probably more to Spain's credit than Argentina's

Agreed. See how after Spain scored the winning goal they sat back and Argentina suddenly seemed to remember the way towards the opposing goal.
A number of corner kicks, one close miss near the end, etc...

For a moment I even wondered if Spain would do an England too :-),
though luckily for them there was not enough time for that.

One might wonder why didn't Argentina try to attack more before
conceding a goal, and I guess the answer is that they simply were not
able to: Spain was good enough to not allow them that.

    Best regards,

A final that has a rCLMundialrCY feel to it!

    RM

So what happened? How did Argentina manage 0 shots in the whole 90
minutes and still manage a draw? And was it an off-day for Argentina's
attack or is Spain's defence really that good?

This is the 2nd consecutive World Cup I've correctly predicted the
    winner.
