Half time in the scrappiest game I can remember in long time (as it
should be given the history, some would say) - 0-0.

More fouls than shots to report in Atlanta.

Don't like the no give card bs to not spoil the entertainment, but then
again this WC is more like entertainment than soccer.

    KIT WATCH:

England in their classic white with dark navy trim, Argentina in their
classic away (and allegedly lucky against England) dark navy complete
with retro Addidas logo, although made slightly less classic by the
inclusion of some kind of pattern in the background.

I have to say, despite the needless pattern my preference is for the
Argentina away shirt. I think I've still got a retro style homage to the Argentina away shirt from about 2002 somewhere.

54 minutes, just as Argentina start more positively and are "knocking on
the door" England break away, Rogers crosses deep from the right to find Gordon at the far post, he finishes to put England 1-0 up!

Of course, when England score instead of seeing ordinary fans
celebrating we get a close up of David and Victoria Beckham.

Sums up everything wrong with this World Cup.

68 minutes - England are basically just sitting back with Argentina
having all the pressure but without creating much - until Gonzalez heads
from close range and forces a reflex save from Pickford!

Have England sat back too soon?

    Can Argentina make the breakthrough?

    England 1 - Argentina 2

    A game of two halves.

Argentina basically wasted the first half stopping England with niggly
fouls, but when England took their only real chance to go 1-0 up, this
brought out the more positive side to Argentina's game. England sat back
too soon with the second half basically played in England's penalty
area, and though they left it late, two goals in seven minutes won the
    game for Argentina.

On balance the best team on the night won.

Looking at how deep in to the tournament England progressed, this looks
    like a successful World Cup.

But in terms of the performances - they often struggled against teams
you would have expected them to beat and seemed to get though on the odd moment of individual brilliance or good fortune at key moments.

That might work against DR Congo or Norway - it usually won't work
    against Argentina.

On balance the best team on the night won.

    No question about that.

It's not just that England sat back and defended too soon, but also
that they were *awful* at defending, leaving Argentina 4 or 5 wide
open headers from the middle of the box.

They should have also figured out a better way to neutralize Messi's
short corners -- that's what led to the first goal.

Masterclass tactics from Gareth Tuchel. It's great when
it works but looks awful when it doesn't.

It did help Chelsea win the Champions League in 2021 so
    I can't complain.

Have England sat back too soon?

    Yes.

    Can Argentina make the breakthrough?

    Yes!

That seems to be the consensus pretty much everywhere.

Michael Cox of the NYT/The Athletic tried to argue in defense of
Tuchel that the English players were just too exhausted after the
Mexico City and Miami games to implement any game plan:

    https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7448592/2026/07/16/england-tactics-world-cup-argentina/?unlocked_article_code=1.yFA.E4dA.05kSf6glxLD4&source=athletic_user_shared_gift_article_copylink&smid=url-share-ta

Still, they had only 12% possession between Gordon's goal and Enzo's
equalizer, and completed a ridiculously low number of passes.

I remember thinking that they badly needed the hydration break to
reorganize (Pickford's great save off Nico Gonzalez's header came just
before the break), but things only went further south after that.

"Oh, bUt it's diFfIcuLt to DeFeNd aGaiNst a tEam As tALEnTed aS

Let's compare England to how Switzerland fared between Embolo's red
card and Alvarez's golazo, when they were desperately trying to hang
    on for penalties, 10 v 11

England versus Argentina (between Gordon and Enzo F goals)
    30 minutes
    8 shots conceded
0.88 xG conceded (0.11 per shot)

Switzerland versus Argentina (between Embolo red card and Alvarez
    goals)

51 minutes (including stoppage times at the end of the 2nd half and
    1st half ET)
    14 shots conceded
0.99 xG conceded (0.07 per shot)

Almost 40% of Switzerland's xG conceded was a single header by
MacAlister in the 89th minute (0.38 xG), contested by Nico Elvedi --
one of those cases where xG seems off. Without that, the average shot
conceded by Switzerland had less than 0.05 xG. That's how you sit deep
    and defend!

    Incredible piece of data.

I remember having seen a similar thing in the recent past. In the first matchday of Conmebol qualifiers for WC'2022, Brasil faced Bolivia in an
empty Arena Corinthians (October 2020, still in the middle of the
pandemic). After 15 minutes, the stat shown on TV was that Brasil had completed 118 passes, while Bolivia had completed 3.

Amazing to see such numbers again in a World Cup semifinal.

    Best regards,

    Ll|-o
