• WCup 2026 Spain - France [r]

    From FF@...@yahoo.com to rec.sport.soccer on Tue Jul 14 20:12:42 2026
    From Newsgroup: rec.sport.soccer

Now this is a game that definitely deserves a thread.

1 - 0 Spain at half time, Oyazabal from a penalty won by Yamal, or
better said rather stupidly given by the french defense.

After it, the game went on as expected, France attacked continuously
and at times dangerously, Spain blocked them well and did some counters
of their own. Just one big chance, Fabian shot from a good position but
the ball was deflected for a corner.

I think there were 3 or 4 fouls on Yamal so far that would have
deserved a YC but weren't even called.

    Min. 58, 2 - 0 Spain.
Beautiful central one - two between Poro and Olmo I think, Poro gets
one on one with the french keeper and scores.

Just as I'm typing this, Yamal scores to but it's cancelled for offside.

I don't think so. It was Yamal's ball and he was brought down, with the defender far from touching the ball.

Nothing, in my view. Being aware of where your
opponent is at all times belongs to the skills a
    defender needs to have.

I guess in theory you could create a rule like in ice
hockey where a high stick (to the body of an opponent)
is not a penalty rCyif the act is committed as a normal
windup or follow through of a shooting motionrCO but
I believe that would open a whole other can of worms.

    Ciao,
    Werner

To end the thread properly, 2 - 0 Spain final score after 90 minutes.

Reading the press, I see most commentators, including some former
french players, agree that Spain outplayed France quite clearly. They functioned as a team, while France were basically just loosely
connected brilliant individuals. Even Deschamps conceded as much, after initially complaining about the ref. This was my impression too, too
bad the reffing sucked (but not like Deschamps thinks, if anything his
side was slightly favored) and the game was unnecessarily dirty. Like
    too many others.

    The best team won.

France, as a team, didn't show up.

Lucas Digne was awful... he should have been replaced at
    half time.

The ref could have booked a few players, Yamal especially...
so either he was just a poor ref or FIFA requested the refs to
be a bit lenient and let things go?

Either way, there was nothing controversial about Spain going
    through.

In fairness, there would have been more uproar if it hadn't
    been given as a penalty.

As a LB, Digne should have been aware of what was behind him.
It was sloppy to swing your foot and not know a player was right
    there.

The penalty reminded me of the penalty that changed the game in the
2018 final. Neither one them should have been given. The kick this
time was not serious and it was a complete accident.

Looks like it, as it happened in so many other games. I'm in the break

one was a piece of cake compared to that one.
