• WCup 2026 QFs Argentina - Switzerland [r]

    From FF@...@yahoo.com to rec.sport.soccer on Sun Jul 12 01:28:41 2026

1 - 0 Argentina in min. 10, McAlister header from a Messi corner.

So far Argentina seem clearly superior. Also, the game looks
surprisingly clean. Hopefully it stays like this until the end.

It didn't. :) Towards the end of the half the hacking began, in one
instance so bad that the ref had no choice than to show a YC before the
break. Very rare at this Cup. Anyway, it's not necessarily worse than
    in other games over-all.

    Still 1 - 0 at half time.

Min. 67, goal Switzerland. Ndoye with a quick action on the left, after
a through pass by some teammate.
I wouldn't say it's a surprise, Switzerland had the better of play in
    the last minutes.

Now Embolo is sent off, second yellow for simulation.

    1 - 1 after regular time.
    Argentina have one extra man.

I'd say Messi had a rather dull game, for his standards. Except for the
cross at the goal, I remember just one personal action that resulted in
a good chance that the swiss keeper had to save. Other than that, a few
    not very dangerous passes.

In any case, England will be very happy with how this quarter evolves, regardless who wins.

Right before the mini-break, Argentina should have had a penalty, their attacker was clearly held down by his marker. He actually and very
visibly hugged him, though I don't think it was a declaration of love.

    2 - 1 Argentina.
Great shot from just outside the left corner of the box by Alvarez.

Barring a huge surprise, Argentina are in the semis too.

And now 3 - 1, on a counter they almost botched, but Martinez scored on
    the rebound.

    Final whistle.
Argentina join England in the semi. Switzerland did well but generally
didn't look like they could actually win.

Yes, it struck me too that this doesn't seem to be a case of mistaken
identity at all. Mistaken identity means the ref shows the card to
another player for the same offense; he's got the right offense but the
wrong player. In this case it was completely different, he thought
there was an offense and, by video verification, he established that in
fact it had been a different offense (and, of course, a different
    offender).

Just to be clear, I think it was the right thing to do. Obviously any
card, shown or not shown, should be validated by the VAR. Except that
under the current rules they aren't (that's probably because if they
were, they risk sending both teams off in less than half an hour).

While we're at it, is it true that now the throw ins have to be done in
less than 5 seconds ? If yes, that's way too little. Downright brutal.
10 seconds minimum, maybe more. 10 seems to be a decent time.

Other people probably knew this before but I didnrCOt
realise until now that the black arm bands Argentina
wore in that match were to commemorate Antonio
Ratt|!n, the guy who basically kicked off the
longstanding English-Argentine football rivalry at the
1966 World Cup, long before any Falklands business.

He died last Saturday aged 89, a shame he didnrCOt get
to see the next chapter in this story tonight.

    Ciao,
