what's more it was also their first ever European goal.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Former Champions League mainstays BATE
currently sit second from last in the Belarusian Premier League with
just one win out of fourteen league games, and are in serious danger of
getting relegated, or perhaps disappear off the map altogether.

In what might be their last European hurrah they fell behind against the Albanian debutants when Ardit Nikaj ran onto a through ball by Rubin

Brazilian centre-back Ruan Renato headed in a corner kick to give the
Azeri the lead, and Georgian striker Davit Volkovi made it two by
latching on to a loose ball in the box. Ruan Renato got his second of
the night by converting a penalty awarded after Torpedo keeper Oto
Goshadze had been too late against Zir+O's Turkish forward Eren Ayd-#n.


Connah's Quay Nomads FC (WAL) v KF Ballkani (KOS)* 0-0 (0-0)

The Nomads had more opportunities but were also lucky that deep in
stoppage time a volley by US-born Anel +aabanad++ovi-c (son of Refik, part
of Yugoslavia's 1990 WC squad) bobbled just past the post.


FC Differdange 03 (LUX)* v Tampereen Ilves (FIN) 0-0 (0-0)

Few shots on goal on either side. Ilves's Swedish captain Jardell Kanga
missed the biggest chance by firing high over the bar from six metres

A carelessly lost ball in defence led to Darko Zori-c slotting in to give Mornar an early lead, but a late brace by new intra-Primera Divisi||
signing Borja Morales gave Andorra their first coefficient points of the
season - first his free-kick from distance was deflected past a helpless
Stefan Popovi-c in the Montenegrin net, and in stoppage time he duped
Mornar centre-back Ilija Martinovi-c and surprised Popovi-c from an angle.

Liep-Uja captain, Luxembourg international, and former Austria Vienna centre-back Marvin Martins saw an early red for a high boot to the chest

Paide, just like in years past still a conduit for Gambian talent into
Europe, opened the scoring through one of them, 19-year-old
Abdourahman Badamosi, who tapped in a cross by right-back Michael
Lilander. The Lithuanian logistics company team equalised with their
first European goal in their fifth European match as Vilius Armanavi-iius
saw his penalty initially saved by Paide's - Gambian, of course - keeper
Ebrima Jarju, but had no problems converting the rebound.

(Terteryan 86'; Ashirbek 60')

Yelimay (which apparently literally translates as 'Oh, my country!')
from the city of Semey in Northeastern Kazakhstan (previously called Semipalatinsk, and mostly known for being the namesake of the Soviet
Union's biggest nuclear testing ground) took the lead in their European
debut through young right-back Arsen Ashirbek who broke into the box
after having been teed up by Ivan Sviridov and despite slipping managed

Late on Davit Terteryan headed in Karen Nalbandyan's corner kick for
the equaliser. Right after this the floodlights gave out for a while,

Virtus took a shock lead in Georgia when Alessandro Golinucci, a veteran

The Irish took their sweet time to break through against a plucky
Gibraltar side, but they got one from the spot after Ross Tierney had
been tripped by St Joseph's Senegalese midfielder Bakary Diedhiou. In
stoppage time Connor Parsons, who a couple of years ago on YouTube
extensively chronicled his arduous journey from Norwich City's academy
to professional football via destinations like the Icelandic third
division, headed in a late second from a cross by fellow Englishman
Sadou Diallo, which should let Bohs breathe a bit easier for the return
leg.

In Stara Zagora in Bulgaria Sileks got their first ever away win in
Europe (at the 13th attempt) thanks to a penalty awarded for a clumsy
tackle by Dinamo's Ivorian left-back Abdoul Aziz Toure on Borjan
Panovski.

One-way football from the start. Maltese international with Argentine
roots Juan Carlos Corbalan scythed down former Lokomotiv Moscow player
Daniil Kulikov to give away a penalty converted by Pyunik's Guinean
journeyman Momo Yansan|-. A shot from distance by veteran midfielder
Artak Dashyan then beat Christoffer Mafoumbi, formerly NT keeper for the Republic of the Congo, at his near post; and after Mafoumbi had done
well to block a shot by the Cypriot substitute Iasonas Pikis from close
range Mikhail Kovalenko nevertheless added Pyunik's third by curling the
loose ball into the empty net.


US Mondorf-les-Bains (LUX) v FC Dinamo Tbilisi (GEO)* 1-2 (0-2)

Mondorf started badly into their first ever European adventure as just
two minutes in Dinamo's Guinean striker Algassime Bah, newly signed from
APOEL, headed in Nika Ninua's corner kick. The same thing happened
seventeen minutes later, only this time it was 37-year-old forward Mate Vatsadze at the end of Ninua's delivery. Despite Dinamo bringing on
Tornike Kvaratskhelia, Khvicha's 16-year-old little brother (and who's
already been dubbed, you guessed it, 'the next Kvaratskhelia') at the
hour mark the Luxembourgers managed to pull one back when Dinamo keeper
Loria let Lenny Stoltz's shot from a tight angle by squirm underneath

A couple of simple goals - Levadia captain Rasmus Peetson headed in
Mihkel Ainsalu's cross from half-space; Jo|uo Pedro, who once arrived in Estonia out of Athletico Paranaense's youth setup, fired in a loose ball
from just outside the box; Mark Oliver Roosnupp volleyed in after the
Welsh defence couldn't clear a corner kick; and Ainsalu's run was left unchecked so he had little trouble slotting past Caernarfon keeper
Connor Roberts. Things got even worse for the Welsh when Ben Nash got
himself sent off for dragging down Bubacarr Tambedou, another one of
those Gambian players in the Estonian league. But youngster Maksimilian Skvortsov fired the ensuing penalty over the bar, and against ten men
Levadia mercifully scored just one more, Ghanaian winger Enock Otoo only seconds after having come on as a substitute rolled another low cross by Ainsalu past Roberts.

Former Gabonese international Fahd Ndzengue fired in from close range
after Vane Krstevski had headed down a cross, and Shk|2ndija piled it on
after the break - Senegalese winger Fabrice Tamba twice powered into the
box to fire past Europa's young Italian keeper Camillo De Luca
(interesting career move there, from Serie D), Almir Kryeziu ran onto
another long ball over the top to make it four, and perpetual Shk|2ndija mainstay Besart Ibraimi, 39 by now, came on as a substitute to score his
32nd goal in Europe - 31 of them in qualifiers, and one in the 2008-09
UI Cup. He has remained scoreless in Shk|2ndija's eight matches in the Conference League proper last year.

English-Italian defender Zeno Ibsen Rossi, who had been signed from
Cambridge United in League One mere hours before the match, headed in a
corner kick to give Glentoran the lead. Martins -|igurs got the equaliser
at the second attempt after his initial shot had been pushed onto the
right post by Glentoran keeper William Crellin. In the second half

Bryan Teixeira, who once seemed destined for greater things when he
shone for Lustenau in the Austrian League four years ago, but
subsequently flopped with Sturm Graz, Magdeburg, and LASK, and also lost
the chance to represent Cape Verde at the World Cup, created Zalgiris's

The Cymru Premier teams apart from TNS really are among the minnowest of
the UEFA minnows. Wales already finished last season's UEFA ranking in second-from-last, with only San Marino below them, and the gap to the
very bottom has since narrowed even more. Andorra on the other hand are absolutely flying at the moment, for their standards.

Due to rough and foggy weather, not an altogether rare occurrence on the islands, the Spartans weren't able to fly in on the days before the
match, but were instead left stranded in Norway and finally arrived on
the Faroes just a few hours before kick-off.

Which perhaps goes some way to explain why NS|i were able to take the
lead through Petur Knudsen who had been left unmarked to head in Jann Benjaminsen's corner kick. Still, last year's league phase participants
got the equaliser thanks to newly signed Norwegian journeyman left-back
Tobias Bj|+rnstad (he's got previous stints in Bulgaria and the German Regionalliga) who arrived at the far post to slot home a cross by

The team formerly known as Dinamo Tirana had their chances to score
against the Kazakh favourites, but Astana still got the only goal when
Ramazan Karimov was left with far too much time and space to collect
a cross by Astana mainstay Marin Tomasov, 38 by now and in his tenth

lead. Stjarnan equalised when V|!kingur keeper B|ir|#ur |i Reynatr|+|# (now there's a Viking name) felled |urvar Eggertsson in the box, and the
resulting penalty was despatched by Stjarnan's top scorer Emil Atlason
(one cap for Iceland). In the second half Atlason then headed Benedikt
War|-n's long ball over |i Reynatr|+|#, and Atlason himself also drew the
foul for the penalty that he converted to complete his hat trick.


FK Sarajevo (BIH)* v FC Inter Turku (FIN) 1-1 (0-1)

Perhaps the highest-profile match in this round. On a water-logged pitch
in Sarajevo the Finns took an early lead when Cameroonian forward Loic
Essomba and young Sierra Leonean international Alie Conteh did very well
to combine on the break, with Conteh at the end heading in Essomba's

Kosovars before he opened the scoring by chipping in Arlind Veliu's

first half indicated that there would be trouble afoot as the Kazakhs
doubled their aggregate lead from the spot after Marin Tomasov had been wrestled down in the box. But disaster struck four minutes after the
re-start when Astana's Croatian keeper Josip -iondri-c under a little
pressure from Eridon Qardaku spilled a harmless long cross, Dinamo

really big career because it was his lazy pass that was intercepted by

moment of the tie came ten minutes later when Ilves were awarded a
penalty for a controversial handball, and Kanga converted from the spot
despite D|-ifferdeng's 42-year-old Brazilian keeper Felipe, formerly of Corinthians and Flamengo, getting a hand to the shot. Kanga's
grandstanding after the goal didn't sit too well with the Luxembourgers
though, and the situation escalated into a full-fledged brawl with
a South American flavour, at the end of which the Argentine Juan

lose the ball inside his own area which allowed Levadia's Brazilian
striker Wendell to score into the empty net with a needlessly flashy
lob. Wendell was also the player that got scythed down by Chris Marriott
for the penalty that was despatched by his Brazilian compatriot Jo|uo
Pedro. After the break Bubacarr Tambedou - yet another Gambian in the
Baltics - chipped over Roberts after the Welsh had once again lost the
ball in defence, and Mihkel Ainsalu finished the rout in style with a

a second-half penalty, but his effort was kept out by Mondorf's Luxembourgish-Portuguese keeper Jo|uo Machado. Three minutes from the end Malagasy international Cl|-ment Couturier headed in Mehdi Kirch's corner
kick to send the tie to extra time, but there a late tackle by Dwayn
Holter on Bah gave away another penalty, and this time around former
PAOK midfielder Niko Ninua left Machado no chance.

Polish-born forward Micha+e Przybylski, a long-time fixture in the
Faroe Islands Premier League, gave the team from Runav|!k the lead with a
shot from distance into the far corner that went in off the post. Former
big Croatian hope Ante -aori-c equalised for the Maltese by volleying in a loose ball following a corner kick. But the real drama eventually
unfolded in the first minute of stoppage time - the Spartans' Brazilian
captain Emerson thought he had to execute a goal kick and stopped the
ball with his hands, only according to the refs the ball had never
crossed the by-line (very hard to tell if that was the case) and so had actually still been in play - therefore the decision was handball and

having been tripped in the box, and Motherwell-trained former Egypt

Ballkani's Slovenian keeper Adnan Golubovi-c with an angled shot. But
Woodcock also missed the biggest chance to get the aggregate equaliser
when his short-range effort only hit the outside of the net.

The Nomads' scoreless draw in the first leg remains the only source of
Welsh coefficient points this season, all of their other seven matches
have so far ended in defeat.

clumsily tripped Atl|?tic substitute Jota Sanmarful right at the edge of
the box, and Elche-trained David Valero despatched the penalty to
equalise. Things got even worse for Mornar when two minutes later
Sanmarfula was again brought down in the area, this time around by
Da+ii-c, and Valero once again made no mistake from the spot.

Just like for Wales, an absolute disaster season for Montenegro - eight matches, eight defeats. They are now practically certain to see their
number of European teams once again reduced to three.

Thanks to this win San Marino secured their first (and perhaps only) coefficient points this season. They're still dead last, but the gap

tepid Latvian defending he beat Riga keeper Frenks Orols at the near

Neft|oi were two up within less than ten minutes - their captain Emin
Mahmudov swept in a cross by former Santa Clara midfielder Gustavo
Klismahn, who might just take the cake as regards Brazilian naming
practices, and Aleksey Ivanov unintentionally headed Mahmudov's cross
against the outstretched arm of his teammate Aleksandr Selyava from
where the ball bounced in at the near post. But this temporary setback
only meant that there were eighty minutes left to turn the match around,
and to everyone's surprise that's exactly what the Belarusians did.
Karen Vardanyan and Yevgeny Malashevich had already missed gilt-edged
chances before the former pulled one back thanks to a blunder by
Neft|oi's Russian-born keeper Emil Balayev who let the shot go straight

Dinamo equalised just after the break thanks to Malashevich's precise
effort from the edge of the box into the bottom far corner. Just ten

counter, with Central African Republic international Moustapha Djimet
centring for Vardanyan to tap in his second of the evening. The Azeri
then once again hit the woodwork - this time around Neft|oi's Slovakian
striker -+ubom|!r Tupta saw his close-range effort pushed against the post
by Dinamo keeper Ivan Shimakovich - and instead they even conceded a
fourth when Guadeloupean centre-back Andreaw Gravillon tripped the
substitute Gulzhigit Alykulov in the box. The Kyrgyzstan international
took the penalty himself, and while his initial effort was saved by
Balayev he managed to head in the rebound.

Ballkani took the lead from the spot after their Ivorian forward
Valentin Serebe had been pulled down from behind by US-born centre-back
Pat Hickey. Bohs got the equaliser thanks to a free-kick trick - English
former League Two striker Douglas James-Taylor was forgotten by the
Kosovar defence as he ran onto Dawson Devoy's through ball and he beat Ballkani's Slovenian keeper Adnan Golubovi-c with an angled shot. In the
last minute Ross Tierney unleashed a great volley from sixteen metres
that thundered in off the underside of the crossbar, with a helpless
Golubovi-c not even moving a muscle. A fitting send-off for the last ever European game in Bohemians' historic Dalymount Park ground which is not suitable to host European games beyond the 2nd qualifying round and is
set to be demolished and reconstructed starting some time next year.

Uzbekistan's World Cup standout Eldor Shomurodov with a fierce shot then
only hit the post for Ba+fak+fehir, and so they had to wait until after

head in Yusuf Sar-#'s corner kick. But that was it as far as dangerous opportunities went, and a cleverly defending Inter Turku side take a
better result home to Finland than probably expected.

An evidently rusty Braga side needed some help to break the deadlock
against the Serbian debutants. ++elezni-iar's 38-year-old goalkeeper Zoran Popovi-c, previously with Red Star and also with a short stint at
Bod|+/Glimt in his r|-sum|-, lost his head a bit when he left his net to challenge Victor G||mez for the ball and instead merely flattened the
Spanish right-back. Braga captain Ricardo Horta, going into his eleventh

loose ball fell kindly for 18-year-old Remo Valdmets who met it with a

The Welsh champions had their chances to equalise, the biggest of which
came in the second half when a shot by Dan Williams got deflected
against the crossbar.

The return leg in Oswestry will be the last chance for Wales to salvage
at least something from this European season. They're dangerously close
to being dead last in the UEFA ranking.

Sutjeska centre-back Boris Kopitovi-c only wanted to clear the ball, but
he still kicked ML Vitebsk's Serbian winger Radivoj Bosi-c in the face
instead, and as that happened just inside the area the Belarusians were
awarded a penalty. Valeri Gromyko saw his spot kick saved by Vlado
Giljen but had no problems converting the rebound. Young centre-back
Kirill Gomanov headed in Artem Kontsevoy's corner kick to make it two,
and twenty seconds after having come on Malian striker Bassekou Diabat|-
raced clear of Anto Babi-c and the former Lechia Gda+ask and Stab|ak
forward slotted past Giljen.

Montenegrin teams are 0-0-9 in Europe this season, and the return leg in Nik+ii-c will be their last chance to avoid a quite ignominious record for their European campaign.

mess. While Hibs wasted all of their opportunities the Kosovars scored a
nice opener when D++emal Ibishi dummied Arlind Veliu's low cross and
Kreshnik Uka swept home behind him. Early in the second half Hibs
striker Nathan Lowe hit the outside of the post from close range, and in
the last minute of the game Malisheva even scored a second - Uka ran
with ease past two Scottish defenders, and he played in former HSV
striker Valjmir Nafiu (two German Bundesliga matches back in autumn
2014) who from close range left Hibs's Austrian keeper Raphael Sallinger

the beach in Liep-Uja the Latvians had to play this 170 km away on what
looked like a high school ground in J+2rmala.
Austria didn't show a great performance by any means, but they did score
from a set-piece - Johannes Eggestein's harmless-looking free-kick cross
was knocked down by Violets captain Manfred Fischer, and former Austrian
youth international Florian Wustinger, whose career had been completely derailed by three torn ACL's, in only his 17th game for the senior team
in four-and-a-half years with the club scored his first ever senior goal

The situation in the Lithuanian summer league is a bit weird this year -
there are currently six teams in the Toplyga (formerly known as A Lyga)
who are within five points and therefore fighting for the title; but
among the remaining three teams who have been distanced (one, Riteriai,
has withdrawn due to bankruptcy) there are two who qualified for Europe
thanks to their results last year, Hegelmann and Panev-u++ys.
Now Hegelmann have already been eliminated in ConfLQ1 by Estonia's
Paide, but Panev-u++ys, who are on equal points with them in the league, ostensibly did a much better job in Europe. They took the lead through
their Senegalese centre-back Seydina Keita who stabbed home from a
goalmouth scramble after a corner kick, and the Kazakh favourites also
saw a second-half penalty by their captain Askhat Tagybergen saved by Panev-u++ys veteran keeper Vytautas -ierniauskas. Tobol still scored an ultimatively deserved equaliser when their Montenegrin centre-half
Nemanja Cavni-c, who had spent six seasons in the Danish 2nd tier,
headed in Tagybergen's free-kick cross.

but while Debrecen's young Bulgarian keeper Plamen Andreev managed to

Few chances in this one until Vele++'s Austrian defender Anes Omerovi-c
had a brain fart and picked up the ball to prepare for a goal kick, only
the goal kick had already been executed by his keeper Faris Ribi-c, the
ball had been in play, and Omerovi-c had caused a penalty (and the
Austrian ref certainly had no language problems explaining the issue).
Pretty much the same mistake that had eliminated the -aamrun Spartans in
the previous round, quite insane to see this happen twice in two weeks. Dunajsk|i Streda's Georgian striker Giorgi Gagua left Ribi-c no chance
from the spot.

In their first European match in 36 years (and only their third European adventure overall, after the 1975-76 and 1990-91 UEFA Cups where they
lost both times in the first round) the team from G||teborg had the

FCN keeper Andreas Hansen had to save against Icelandic youngster

the Andorrans were level, a nicely played counter-attack found Predrag
Mu|#oz alone through on goal, and despite a somewhat heavy first touch
Niklas Hedl hesitated to close down which allowed the Spaniard to slot

Demir, who we all expected so much more of when he played a couple of

FCSC had one more big chance to equalise when Kun Temenuzhkov, whose

about Petter Nosa Dahl in the box, and the Norwegian substitute squared

FC Vaduz (LIE)* v Atl|?tic Club d'Escaldes (AND) 4-0 (1-0)

Vaduz have returned to the Swiss top division after a five-year absence,
and this result improved on their recent lacklustre European outings as
well. Following their surprise qualification to the Conference League
group stage in 2022-23 they've only had one win and two draws in eight
European matches.
Young Boys-trained midfielder Mischa Eberhard opened the scoring by
collecting Dominik Schwizer's pass and with a quick turn he powered into
the box and fired a volley past Atl|?tic keeper Adri|a Mu|#oz, who back in
2015 played three minutes in La Liga 2 with Llagostera. Schwizer also
provided the cross that Eberhard stabbed home from close range to make
it two. Late on young Uruguayan-German substitute Juan Cabrera, who had
just been signed by Vaduz from Greuther F|+rth, volleyed in Liridon
Berisha's cross, and a curious goal finished the rout - the Andorran
defence lost possession to Cabrera during a failed attempt to shepherd
the ball out of play, and 36-year-old Serbia-born and Switzerland-raised striker Dejan Sorgi-c, a long-time fixture in the top two Swiss
divisions, in the end tapped the ball into the empty net.

Latvian cup winners Auda are currently a distant third in the Virsl-2ga
behind city rivals RFS and Riga FC, but they were more than a match for
the Romanian favourites, who come off their worst domestic season in
more than half a century and only qualified for Europe thanks to two
extra time wins in the post-season play-off rounds.

twenty minutes, and the Slovenians were lucky that Eridon Qardaku's
free-kick went off the outside of the post. Late on Dinamo returned the first-half gift and so allowed Aluminij to score their first ever goal

Matja++ Rozman no chance from the spot. Rok Kopatin, half Rozman's age,
soon equalised for the Slovenians by steering in Italian winger Divine Omoregie's deflected cross. Bravo scored a deserved winner in the
second half when Jakoslav Stankovi-c was allowed to waltz unhindered
through the North Macedonian defence and he beat Shk|2ndija keeper
Astrit Amzai with a shot into the bottom near corner.

In their third European tie this was Bravo's first ever home win, but
funnily enough they won both their previous away matches.

goal, this time it was Moore who fired in from Evan Caffrey's assist.
The Estonians must have thought third time's the charm because they
continued trying to play from the back, and this time it was Freitas
who intercepted the bad pass and set up Alistair Coote for the finish.
At least Shelbourne's new Welsh keeper Eddie Beach thoughtfully tried to
repay those favours - he left his net to beat Enrique Esono to a long
pass but was way too late, and caught halfway between his net and the

Just when it looked as if the Welsh teams wouldn't even manage a single
win in Europe this season a long ball into the Estonian box wasn't
cleared properly, and Ben Wilson fired the loose ball into the far
corner. But in the shoot-out Wilson saw his penalty saved by Flora
keeper Evert Gr|+nvald, and while Nathan Shepperd in the TNS net also
saved against Tony Varjund, Josh Lock sent the decisive penalty over the crossbar.

Wales finish their European season second from last, behind Montenegro
and just 1.5 points ahead of San Marino. But San Marino still have a
team in the competition (thanks to the luck of the draw in which Tre
Fiori received a bye to ConfLQ3).

A fully deserved win. Before this season, Inter Turku had never made it

Turkey on the other hand are the highest-placed nation in the UEFA
ranking to have already lost a team.

In Stara Zagora in Bulgaria Neft|oi soon halved their first-leg deficit
as a careless clearance by the Belarusian defence ended up in front of
their own box and Brazilian midfielder Breno Almeida latched on to the
loose ball and fired past Dinamo's young keeper Ivan Shimakovich. But
the Azeri hardly created any chances after that, and while they were
still chasing the one goal that would have levelled the aggregate tie,
deep in stoppage time Falaye Sacko lost the ball as last man under a
challenge from Dinamo's Nigerian Fawaz Abdullahi (could have been
whistled as a foul to be honest), and Neft|oi's Malian right-back grabbed
the loose ball with both arms to bury it underneath him.

It's been a pretty bad European week for Azerbaijan - Zir+O and Neft|oi
got eliminated while Qaraba-f dropped down to Conference League
qualifiers. At least Sabah secured a European league stage.

In a back-and-forth game in Ploie+Oti in Romania an early free-kick by
Omer Atzili went off the outside of the post before AEK were awarded a
penalty when on occasion of a corner kick Cameroonian midfielder Boris
Enow blocked Hrvoije Mili-ievi-c's header with his arm, and Larnaca's
Bosnian centre-back converted from the spot himself. AEK keeper Andreas Paraskevas then pulled off a great save to deny former Austrian

The North Macedonians pumped cross after cross into the Slovenian box,
and they got the equaliser when Ga+iper Jovan finally deflected a centre
by Drilon Islami past his own keeper Matja++ Rozman. Shk|2ndija scored the aggregate equaliser shortly after the break through Almir Kryeziu who
met yet another cross by Senegalese winger Fabrice Tamba with a
powerful header. Another header by Shk|2ndija's Gabonese striker Fahd
Ndzengue then went off the outside the post, and a shot from distance by
Marko ||or||ievski, back in North Macedonia following a stint in the
Romanian SuperLiga with FC Hermannstadt, bounced off the crossbar. The Slovenians therefore were able to hold on to the result until two

Israeli keeper Tom Amos. Instead, the Faroese took the lead when Beinir
