Messi misses another golden chance, but eventually makes it count at
the third attempt. 1-0 and 17th career WC goal, making him the all
time leader, at least for a few more hours before Mbappe faces Iraq.

People still don't talk about this enough, but somewhere between 75
and 90 percent of the time, penalty takers give away the direction of
the shot with their other foot. Messi tried to fool the keeper on
that one. He pointed his right foot to his left, then shot to his
right (the keeper's left.) And he made just about the worst mess of
it that I have ever seen in a penalty.

I think his goal went in because the goalkeeper was fooled and didn't
see Messi coming. He was moving to his left at the moment of the shot.
It was well within reach to his right, but he couldn't reverse course.

Austria is doing a lot of good playing but hasn't shown anything up
close yet.

Messi was all alone because his scheduled marker was
writhing near the half-way line (Argentina got away
with a lot), and young somewhat inexperienced Paul
Wanner completely failed to pick up his run.
