At Estadio Akron, Zapopan:
Mexico 1-0 South Korea
50' Luis Romo
Mexico is through to the next round with this close and hard-fought win
over South Korea. The Mexican goal was a bit of a gift by the Korean
defense - a cross into the penalty area which Kim Seung-gyu (who
otherwise had a good game) came out to cut, just to run onto his own
defender and drop the ball for Romo to finish. South Korea fought hard
to find the equalizer, but to no avail.
Mexico has wrapped up 1st place too, since only South Korea themselves
can reach their 6 points. That could mean they can afford to save
players or legs against Czechia, since for them the game is meaningless, though to the opposition it isn't. But I'm not sure they'd do that at
Estadio Azteca, in front of their fans. Plus, what do I know, they may
want to keep their momentum going.
South Korea now faces South Africa and needs at least one point to be on
the safe (well, safer) side. They are the better of the two sides,
though, and should enter this game as favorites. Czechia and South
Africa, otoh, have to go for the win.
Best regards,
