    13 minutes in, still 0-0.

Senegal actually had the upper hand in the opening minutes, with
France happy to play some Deschamps-ball. France a bit better in the
past few minutes. No real chances to speak of, yet.

Game had settled into a fairly slow rhythm without mauch happening,
then suddenly Nicolas Jackson is sent through on a break, beats
Upamecano for pace, and his low diagonal shot hits the post at
Maignan's near post, bounces back onto Maignan's foot, and slowly
dribbles out for a corner. That was close.

    Hydration break, still 0-0.

Speaking of which, what do we think of the fact that football is now a
    game of four quarters?

    Bingo!

Isn't that what the US broadcasters wanted in 1994? Back then
FIFA rejected it. Now we have it... and they are no more simple
hydration breaks than I am the man in the moon... the are
factored in as advertising breaks by the US networks. (Who don't
like any sport that goes on for ages without a break.) So games
now are, in practice, four quarters. Regardless of the venue or
    temperature at the venue.

The weird thing is, they don't stop the clock at the "hydration
break" so there's always [at least] three minutes added on at
    the end of every half.

Interestingly, I'm watching the matches mostly on Telemundo (the Spanish-language network) and they just keep on the broadcast during
the hydration break (with pundits punditting) rather than going to
commercials. That bothers me a lot less than the matches I watched
while traveling the first few days, where they did go to commercials.
    Go figure.

I switched off for the end of the first half, beginning of the second.
Just as I turn it back on, first big chance for France, but Olise has
    his shot deflected wide.

And now an even bigger chance for Mbappe, but Mendy wins the 1v1.

Now Mbappe beats his man and gets tripped in the box. Ref initially
waves it away, but surely VAR will give a penalty?

Relatively long deliberation by VAR, they call the referee to the
sideline video, he has a quick look and then announces: "The attacker
initiated the contact, the final decision is goal kick!"

First really controversial referee/VAR decision in this WC, and to be
honest, I quite like it. Also the clear explanation by the ref.

The sliding tackle was imprudent, but he didn't make any contact, and
Mbappe made sure to drag his trailing leg over the defender's leg and
get tripped. No problem whatsoever if these are not penalties any
    more.

In the meantime, Olise threads a beautiful through-ball to Mbappe, and
this time he makes no mistake. 1-0. France had really turned things up
a notch at the beginning of the second half, and are deservedly ahead.

Just before the end of the third quarter Jackson beats Maignan, but he
    was well offside.

Mbappe will break the total goals scored record this year, which we will include in a section called World Cup records that matter.

France look good, I stand by my prediction. They beat their Bogey team

    Ndiaye (of Everton) gives Senegal

I think it was Mbaye of PSG.

I liked the way Senegal played, and thought they were the better team in
the first half. The ref let a lot go, perhaps correctly and there seemed
to be fewer fouls and stoppages than usual. In my biased view, Senegal
were unfortunate not get a few calls, some of which were at important
times (led to counterattacks by france), but on the other hand I would
say there are very few refs who would not have given that penalty. I do
like the ref's thinking and justification (attacker initiated contact),
but I suspect in this case he was wrong.
