• The Staff game (AKA Crazy Tiny Players) - Choice #0373

    What happened
    =============

Situation before the match (squad, bank, table, results of matches
before yours if any, opponents' line-up): http://rssclash.altervista.org/staff/0372/index.html

You agreed with Ben's suggestion about the XI to field.

    Video of the match:
    https://youtu.be/TiXFh12fTdQ

What happened (picked XI, match result, match stats, results of matches
after yours if any, table, squad, bank, players on the market): http://rssclash.altervista.org/staff/0373/index.html

    New choice
    ==========

What do you want to do?

    B. Buy = make an offer for one of the players on the market.
    - Consider that: you supposedly can't buy more than 5 players in a
season. So far this season, you bought 1 player.
    - You must specify: the player.
    - You can specify: the starting sum, the max sum, and whether you want
to use one or two players of yours (whether they are on the market or
not) to replace the amount of money equivalent to their current price.
If you do not specify these details: starting sum = current price, max
sum = current price + 20%, offer no player.

    E. Evaluate = get the complete skill report of a player (in your squad,
    or on the market).
    - Consider that: you'll have to skip the next market round (in addition
to the current one). Then you'll be given the chance to put that player
on the market (if in your squad) or to make an offer for him (if he is
    on the market now).
    - You must specify: the player.

    H. Heal = one of the following two:
H1. Reduce the injury of a player by 1 match. You skip the next 2 market rounds (in addition to the current one), though.
H2. Heal a knocked player, and you'll skip just the next round (in
    addition to the current one).
    - You must specify: the player.

    M. Make Money = get an additional 1,292,253 pounds (20% of your budget
at the beginning of the season).
    - Consider that: you'll have to skip the next 3 market rounds (in
    addition to the current one).

    N. Nothing.

    R. Release = give the following randomly picked player a free transfer: J.Viljanen

    S. Sell = put one of the following two randomly picked players on the
market, making it more likely to receive offers for him, but also making
it automatic to sell him if you receive an offer, if it is about the min
    sum:
    Suominen
    Tsymbalar
    - Consider that: if you put a player on the market, you won't be given
the chance to take him off it. Also, you supposedly can't sell more than
5 players in a season. So far this season you sold 0 players, plus 0 in exchange for players you bought.
    - You must specify: the player.
    - You can specify: the min sum you're willing to accept for selling him.
If you do not specify it, it is original price - 20%.

    T. Train = improve a player by 1 point out of 7 (if goalkeeping: out of
47, and that will make his price higher) in a skill of your choice.
    - Consider that: you'll skip the next 3 or 4 (random choice; if
goalkeeping, 3) market rounds (in addition to the current one).
    - You must specify: the player and the skill.

    Useful info
    ===========

    How to read the screenshots
    ---------------------------

    Squad screen:
    - Head:
    - Red card = suspension; number on the card = number of matches the
    player is suspended for.
    - Bandaged head = the player has taken a knock.
    - Red cross = injury; number on the cross = number of matches the
    player will be out for.
    - Black cross = the player is out for the season
    - Skills:
    - P = Passing
    - V = shot Velocity from outside the penalty box
    - H = Heading
    - T = Tackling
    - C = ball Control
    - S = Speed
    - F = Finishing inside the penalty box
    - Current price: it is based on the player's original price (which is
based on his skills, see below) and his form (which, in turn, is
supposedly based on regular playtime in a role that is right for the
player). There is no consensus among fans about the current price
    causing better performances or not.
    - Trial = without contract (so their price is unknown [it's low in
most but not all cases] and they could leave the team anytime; if you
play them enough, they'll get a contract)

    About the game
    --------------

You can join the game at any time. Randomly picked vote chooses (picked
when the next choice is set up, something that happens at least 71 hours (i.e., 3 days minus 1 hour) after the choice is posted).

This is a career in Sensible World of Soccer 96/97, a videogame. Prices
    are in pound sterlings.

Here are the only (as far as I know) variables in SWOS that matter to you:
    - Match: each player acts according to the team's formation [1], to his
value in each skill [2], and to his natural position [3] (and to home advantage?). By default you know each player's 1st 2nd and 3rd best
skills, and his original price, that is correlated to the sum of the
value of all his skills [4].
    - Suspensions and injuries (if a player has taken a knock, his form is supposedly OK, but he's more likely to pick up a serious injury; the
knock will heal if he'll get rest)
    - Bank:
    When Money in Money out
    Season begins Competition bonuses
    Sponsorship*
Each week Gate receipts* General running costs**
    Wages**
    Player sales Player purchases
    * Proportional to results
    ** Proportional to players' prices
You can buy and sell players all season long. Other teams always play
with the same XI and don't exchange players with each other.
    [1] List of default formations:
    4-4-2 = 4-1-3-2
    5-4-1 = 5-1-3-1
    4-5-1 = 4-1-4-1
    5-3-2 = 3-2-3-2
    3-5-2 = 3-2-3-2
    4-3-3
    4-2-4 = 4-2-3-1
    3-4-3 = 3-1-3-3
    4-4-2s = S-3-1-3-1 (AKA sweep)
    5-2-3
    3-2-5 = 3-2-3-2 (AKA attack)
    6-3-1 = 6-2-1-1 (AKA defend)
All with RB and LB, and (the only exception being "defend") RW and LW
(as forwards if there are just 2 midfielders, otherwise as midfielders).
[2] List of skills: ball control, finishing inside the penalty box,
heading, passing, speed, tackling, shot velocity from outside the
penalty box. A player's value in each of these skills can be 0 to 7. Goalkeepers only have a goalkeeping skill that can be 0 to 48; only goalkeepers have this skill.
    [3] List of positions: G, RB, D, LB, RW, M, LW, A.

    Staff personalities
    -------------------

    B. Ben the Basic: only looks at skills
[XI based on: only players priced 30K or more,
    - S + T + (C or H or P) = defender
    - P + T + (C or S) = defensive midfielder
    - P + (any combination of C, S, V) = attacking midfielder
    - S + (F or V) + (C or H) = attacker
    - S + F + V = attacker
    ]

    D. Dan the Dazzled: only looks at prices
[XI based on original price = playing a player priced 30K or more off
position is better than playing a player priced less than 30K on
position; <30K players are ranked in the following way 1) on trial > 2) formerly on trial but now 5-25K > 3) 25K.]

    F. Fred the Frugal: wants to save money
[XI based on original price, but no player on trial]

    N. Noah the Netter: thinks that it's all a matter of scoring and not
    being scored against
[two attackers, then XI based on original price]

    O. Ollie the Opponent: only looks at opponents
[Stop as soon as the criterium is matched:
    1. Playing home against a lower-placed team? XI based on original price,
    but more than 2 attackers.
Playing away against a higher-placed team? XI based on original price,
    but 5 defenders.
    2. Playing against 3 midfielders? XI based on original price, but 3-5-2. Playing against 3 defenders? XI based on original price, but 4-3-3.
    3. Playing against more than one speedy attacker? XI based on original
    price, but sweep.
    4. XI based on original price, but 4-4-2.]

    P. Pat the Paranoid: is scared of injuries and suspensions
[Stop as soon as the criterium is matched:
    1. Playing home against a lower-placed team? Same formation as Dan, then
XI based on original price, but rest any knocked or booked player, and
    the three best players.
    2. Same formation as Dan, then XI based on original price, but no
    knocked or booked players.]

    S. Scott the Scout: tries to find new talents
[XI based on original price, but one more unknown-value player]

    W. Will the Watcher: only looks at stats
[Same formation as Dan, then XI based on Avg+- (players priced less than
    30K only if positive score)]

Yes. I can only imagine the gamemaster's cartwheels when random.org
spit out some number like 0.99996586

    The probabilities were:

    Dan 60%
    Pat 30%
    Ollie 8.3%
    Ben 1.7%

    Good thing Mazzantini was inspired!

Good thing indeed. Some other comments:

    - For an ultra-defensive park-the-bus strategy, there wasn't a lot of bus-parking. Barely any, to be honest.
    - On the other hand, it looked as if our guys were more inclined to
play intricate passing moves rather than our typical kick-and-run
style that has served us well so far.
    - Halonen must have felt the competition from Tricarico. A
    Maradonesque goal!
    - Puputti out for 1 match, permanent bench-warmer Jarkko Wiss out for
three (maybe a good thing, as Ben won't get any ideas...). Still,
    bleeping Veikkausliga butchers!

    Tchau!

Interesting choices on the horizon...You wonder how a washed up Thomas
Hassler will fare in the Veikkausliga (if he can avoid getting hacked
to pieces, that is...). [This is *not* a choice, just some musings...]

5 in the back evidently means three players standing around uselessly

Exactly my thoughts. The Turku Messi they would have called him, if
Messi had been a thing in the mid-90s.

Not only featured, but was pretty much a regular starter in 1996 and
1998. Then it looks as if he retired from the NT and skipped all the
Euro 2000 qualifiers, only to be recalled ahead of the final
tournament. He started the first match against Romania (a
disappointing 1-1 draw vs Romania), was an an unused sub in the 1-0
loss to England, and came in for the last 30 minutes in the 3-0 loss
to Portugal, his 108th and last international cap.

Anyway, he's a PCV midfielder. Just the 3M transfer fee. Peanuts,
    given Marika's skills.

disappointing 1-1 draw vs Romania), was an an unused sub in the 1-0
loss to England, and came in for the last 30 minutes in the 3-0 loss
to Portugal, his 108th and last international cap.

Anyway, he's a PCV midfielder. Just the 3M transfer fee. Peanuts,
    given Marika's skills.

I'm inclined to offer 3.5M for the guy.

    Tchau!

I'm not sure about that. Breaking the bank for someone who is not an
immediate necessity? He's probably better than Puputti and McGinlay in
all their skills, but still? Doesn't look like the right profile for
the Veikkausliga. And I would rather spend money on six 1M players
    than two 3M ones.

I'm not ruling it out, but I'm hesitant.

I was thinking more Amilton Dinga to strengthen our RB position.

OK, time to make some calls:

    Offer 3.5M for Hassler: 0.25
Offer 800k for Amilton Dinga: 0.35
    Offer 1M for Saganowski: 0.15
    Make money: 0.15
    Heal Puputti: 0.1

    Futbolmetrix:

    - On the other hand, it looked as if our guys were more inclined to
play intricate passing moves rather than our typical kick-and-run
style that has served us well so far.

Yes, the wingers were clearly more involved than usual. It must be an
    effect of the formation.

    - Halonen must have felt the competition from Tricarico. A
    Maradonesque goal!

    ...or this.

    Werner Pichler:

5 in the back evidently means three players standing around uselessly
around the corners of the penalty area.

This leaves one corner uncovered! You must clearly play 6 at the back.

    - Halonen must have felt the competition from Tricarico. A
    Maradonesque goal!

Exactly my thoughts. The Turku Messi they would have called him, if
Messi had been a thing in the mid-90s.

So the Turku Yal|o-#n (AKA the Turku Turkish).

Wait, what? Washed-up Thomas Hassler featured in Euro 1996, WC1998 and
    Euro 2000?

One day, you'll learn that there's life after Juventus.

Not today, but one day you will.

(In this case, it's also after juventus = post iuventutem.)

Your top 11 players have in average 16(.27) skill points.

    Replacing 6 of such average players with 1M players: (28 - 16) * 6 = +72 points

    Replacing 2 with 3M: (38 - 16) * 2 = +44

The reasoning shows that Futbolmetrix is right. Which means that there
must be a flaw in the reasoning.

(Futbolmetrix is like the opposite of the Scripture to me)
