Teams advancing to the Round of 32 (32 teams total)All 12 group winners +
all 12 runners-up + the 8 best third-placed teams (ranked by points ? goal difference ? goals scored, etc.): Czech Republic (A), Bosnia and
Herzegovina (B), Scotland (C), Ecuador (E), Sweden (F), Norway (I), Algeria (J), Ghana (L). (The thirds from G, H, D, and K fall just outside the top 8
in my simulation.)
How the Round of 32 will be set up (based on my predictions)
The knockout bracket is fixed by FIFA rules (published in the regulations
and match schedule). 12 group winners + 12 runners-up + the 8 best thirds advance. Pairings for runners-up vs runners-up and some winners vs
runners-up are locked by group letters.
The 8 thirds are slotted into specific matches according to which groups
they come from (495 possible combinations are predefined in Annex C of the regulations; my set of thirds from groups A, B, C, E, F, I, J, L determines
the exact slots).
Here is the predicted Round of 32 bracket with my teams plugged in (dates/venues are the official ones; exact 3rd-place slots are mapped to my combination):
Runner-up A vs Runner-up B: South Korea vs Canada
Winner E vs Best 3rd from A/B/C/D/F: Germany vs Sweden (3F u strongest in
that set)
Winner F vs Runner-up C: Netherlands vs Morocco
Winner C vs Runner-up F: Brazil vs Japan
Winner I vs Best 3rd from C/D/F/G/H: France vs Scotland (3C u only
qualifier in set)
Runner-up E vs Runner-up I: Ivory Coast vs Senegal
Winner A vs Best 3rd from C/E/F/H/I: Mexico vs Ecuador (3E u strongest available in set)
Winner L vs Best 3rd from E/H/I/J/K: England vs Algeria (3J)
Winner D vs Best 3rd from B/E/F/I/J: USA vs Norway (3I)
Winner G vs Best 3rd from A/E/H/I/J: Belgium vs Czech Republic (3A)
Runner-up K vs Runner-up L: Colombia vs Croatia
Winner H vs Runner-up J: Spain vs Austria
Winner B vs Best 3rd from E/F/G/I/J: Switzerland vs Bosnia and Herzegovina
(3B)
Winner J vs Runner-up H: Argentina vs Uruguay
Winner K vs Best 3rd from D/E/I/J/L: Portugal vs Ghana (3L)
Runner-up D vs Runner-up G: Turkey vs Egypt
