Well... are we ready to rock?

Who are we tipping for the Stanley Cup this year?

Looking at the betting markets... before putting my
obligatory twenty Euro on the New York Rangers...
the main sports-book companies show a tight race at
the top, with the Panthers & Hurricanes being the main
    favourites...

    Florida Panthers: +640 to +700
    Carolina Hurricanes: +650 to +750

Not sure I'd like to see either of them win it to be honest.
So assuming Sully doesn't manage to create some sort of a
miracle at MSG, my neutral outsider pick for the Stanley
    Cup is Minnesota Wild...

    Eastern bias.

Sportsbook companies and Bookmakers don't have bias Dave. Their
offered odds are all about making them money, not the punter.
Odds are done by computer algorithms and are based on true
probabilities, then adjusted to provide a margin. (In their
favour.) They are not done by a guy sitting in an office with
a pen and paper saying he doesn't like team x because they play
    in Red.

Once the season starts and probabilities change, the odds
will change too... so the Sportsbook companies don't get
caught out. Pre-season, there's money to be made... IF you
pick the right team! Twenty dollars on the Oilers would be a
good bet today. In December, after a twenty game winning
    streak... not so much.

Fans are the ones that have bias. We always think our team
is the best and has a great chance of winning the Cup every
year. Creating mental justification for that opinion... with
strong arguments often based on nothing more than hopium. (Hello
Leafs fans!) Then we get surprised when nobody else agrees or it
doesn't happen! But we wouldn't have it any other way, would we?
    :-)

It's a long season and things turn on a dime.

Now that virtual casinos/sports betting is legal in Alberta I refuse to
give a single dime to these vultures. It's so convenient that someone
can lost their house from the comfort of their couch.

Of course. Things can, and will, change as the season progresses
and teams establish some sort of form... or lack of it, in
certain cases! That's why I like to do my team picks pre-season
and see how they go. The odds are bigger and nobody really
knows, so it's like a lottery. It might come up, it might not.

Now that virtual casinos/sports betting is legal in Alberta I

Well... that IS proper gambling... and yes, it can be very
addictive. The NHL's insistence of shoving casino and online
    gambling/betting sites down everyone's throats when they're
trying to watch a hockey game is certainly not good. It doesn't
seem like real money when you are clicking a button in an app.
    It's too easy.

Over here they use the term "bet responsibly" on a lot of the
Bookmakers ads, but the cashier isn't going to question you when
you shove your tenner over the counter with your betting slip
    either. So it's meaningless...

Of course 'bet responsibly' in reality would mean not putting
twenty Euro on the NYR to win the Stanley Cup each year... or
Chelsea to win the Premier League title every season either!
(Even though it actually worked once - in 2016.) If the cashiers
understood the NHL they'd look at my paper slip then say "Sir,
for your own good we are refusing that bet. Please take your
money back. You will thank us next May." ! :-)

Back in the Oiler's glory days (the wild 80's) I did bet 100.00 in
October with co-worker that the Oilers would take the cup. He was a
dyed in wool Canadien fan and was really pissed when I won. LOL.

It's one thing watching the endless betting ads, but now it's legal here
    and the ads are insane.

Talking of the Oilers, that was some game last night. I watched

The gambling/casino adverts drive me nuts. They certainly don't
encourage me to try online betting anyway. (Despite their
plentiful free bet 'offers'.) If anything, the constant adverts
    drive me away from it!

It was a good come back by the Oilers, but they now have a 4 year streak
of losing their season opener. Bouchard seems to be taking his role
seriously this year which is a pleasant surprise. He was on fire.

I will take the casino ads over the latest propaganda spew from our
Provincial Government which might explain how repulsive their bullshit is.

Unfortunately I didn't have Bouchard in my Fantasy Stars line-up
last night... I went with Fox and Durzi on my Blue line. (Yes,
yes, I know!!!!) Bouchard was on fire though.

Babcock might some time to get his ideas across, but as I said,
at least the Oilers got a point out of it. Which is more than
can be said for some teams...

Oh well, only 83 games left to go... anything can happen. :-)
