IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday May 24th, 2026
    __________________________________________________________________

Important Notice from the IRTS Committee

The following important notice for all society members is being
delivered through our regular news bulletin, in addition to email, the
IRTS groups.io portal, as well as available via the IRTS website.

It has recently come to our attention that information contained in
IRTS membership records has been exported by an individual member of
the society to independently create a bespoke dataset containing
personal data of IRTS members. This is referred to as the "Unauthorised
Dataset". The use of IRTS membership records for this purpose, and the
creation of the Unauthorised Dataset, was not authorised by the IRTS
committee and does not comply with our GDPR policy. The committee has
reported the incident to the Data Protection Commission. We are
currently obtaining legal advice in respect of our legal obligations
    and responsibilities towards our members.

The IRTS collects and processes the following personal information
about its current members, and members who have recently allowed their
membership to lapse: name, address, email address, and radio call sign.
This is designated as "IRTS Personal Data". IRTS Personal Data is used
by the society to provide services to, and manage relationships with,
members, and to undertake accounting and other record-keeping
functions. IRTS Personal Data is only processed for these purposes.
From time to time, this data may be disclosed to third parties who are
agents of the society or authorised personnel acting on our directions.

We believe that the IRTS membership records containing IRTS Personal
Data have been exported by an individual member of the IRTS to create
the Unauthorised Dataset. We understand the individual member included
additional personal data of some members in the Unauthorised Dataset,
which we refer to as "Additional Personal Data". The source of this
Additional Personal Data is unknown, and we believe the Unauthorised
Dataset has limited distribution. We wish to strongly emphasise that
the official IRTS membership records do not contain Additional Personal
Data, and that the IRTS does not collect or process Additional Personal
Data. Furthermore, the incident does not indicate that the IRTS systems
were attacked by a malicious threat actor.

The committee is continuing to investigate the incident. We are working
to secure and destroy the Unauthorised Dataset, implement a full review
of access rights of appropriate people who have access to the IRTS
Membership Records, and design a full retraining programme in respect
of collecting, processing, and securing IRTS Personal Data. The
committee is disappointed by the incident, which occurred despite our
ongoing commitment to data security. We will provide an update to
members when more information becomes available.

If you have any information relating to the incident, please contact
the society via email to irts_secretary /at/ irts.ie

A full written version of this notice is available to view on the IRTS
website and IRTS Groups.io page. The IRTS committee would like to thank
the membership for the outpouring of support since news of this has
    broken.

Harmonised Amateur Radio Examination Certificate Exams

The IRTS extends its best wishes to all candidates who recently sat the
amateur radio licence exam. Results will be reported directly via email
in the coming days. Successful candidates should monitor their inbox
for an invitation to register with ComReg's E-Licensing portal. Once
registered, applicants can obtain their callsign upon payment of the
required licensing fee. Be aware that ComReg-issued amateur radio
licences require re-confirmation of licensee profile details every five
years. Please consider setting a calendar reminder for this but you
will get a notification from ComReg when this is due. Candidates who
wish to re-sit the exam are encouraged to check the IRTS website
irts.ie for details of upcoming exam dates.
