WIA EDUCATION.
education.wia.org.au
Hello, this is Amanda VK1AH Chair and Secretary of the WIA education
committee with an update on our progress.
We completed our first tasking from the WIA board to review of all the ACMA syllabi for amateur radio qualifications and provided the results to the WIA Board.
Our next task was to provide information to assist trainers to run training courses for all levels of qualification. However, before that was commenced,
we needed to know what the expectations of our volunteer trainers were. Who
are a mix of experienced operators, individuals with educational,
professional and industry qualifications. A survey was sent out to WIA Affiliated clubs and interested parties to gather information on their expectations.
The overwhelming request was to provide lesson plans, based on the current
ACMA syllabi.
In 2005 we completed the task of producing Lesson plans for the Foundation qualification, and they are being prepared for upload to the WIA education
web site.
education.wia.org.au
We have not tried to emulate standards of other educational organizations. We believe our plans provide guidance that is consistent and free from
unnecessary material for the level of qualification.
Our next task, for 2026, is the production of Standard Lesson Plans.
This will be a challenge for the committee with the greater depth of
knowledge and wider range of subjects required. All lesson plans will change over time, and we welcome feedback or suggestions for inclusions in the
lesson plans.
My thanks to the committee and to all the volunteer trainers that provided feedback and continue to put in time to encourage newcomers into the hobby of amateur radio.

WIA BOARD ELECTION.
Hello, fellow amateurs! This is Klaus, VK3IU.
For over four decades, my professional life as a Telecommunications Engineer and my personal passion as a licensed amateur radio operator have been intertwined. This unique blend of technical expertise and hands-on hobbyist experiencecoupled with proven leadership in project management and club governanceis precisely the skill set I bring to the table as I ask for your vote for the WIA Board of Directors.
You see, I believe our national association should reflect the very best of
our on-air spirit: clear communication, reliable support, and a shared sense
of purpose.
My journey in radio started back in 1980, and its taken me from being a Telecommunications Engineer in Europe, to the Philippines under the callsign 4F1RWW, to here in Australia, where Ive called home since 2000.
But my real qualification isnt just my careerits what Ive done *within* our community. After reigniting my passion for radio in 2020, I didnt just
re-join the WIA; I rolled up my sleeves. For the past five years, Ive served
my local club, the Gippsland Gate Radio and Electronics Club, as both
Treasurer and Secretary. We strengthened our finances, updated our policies, and proved that with good governance, a club can thrive.
And that experience showed me something crucial: the vital link between a healthy national body and our local clubs is well, its sometimes a bit faint.
Thats exactly why Im running for the Board a second time.
While the WIAs crucial work with government must continue, we cannot let it drown out the voices from our clubs and individual members. You have ideas, concerns, and solutions that the board needs to hear.
So, here is my direct pledge to you:
First, I will be your accessible advocate. Wherever practical, I will visit your clubs in person. If distance is a barrier, well meet online. My doorand
my inboxwill be open.
Second, I will champion transparency. I will campaign to restart the publication of non-sensitive board minutes, push for proactive communication, and ensure regular, meaningful updates on the WIA website. You shouldnt have
to guess what your Board is doing.
And third, I will always answer you openly. Ill maintain a public Q&A site where you can ask tough questions and expect honest answers. No spin, just straight talk.
Some may wonder about my commitment. Let me be clear: I firmly believe the
WIA is our only legitimate national voice. But for it to truly serve us, it must evolve. We must move forward together as a modern organisationone that operates openly, honestly, and energetically for every amateur in Australia.
If you believe in that future, I would be deeply honoured to have your vote.
You can find out more about my vision and my background.
Just visit QSL.NET/VK3IU or find me on QRZ.COM
This is Klaus, VK3IU, signing off for now. I look forward to connecting with you, and I hope to earn your trust and your vote.

The National Trust is marking the 125th anniversary of the Lizard Wireless Station -- the clifftop site that helped transform global communication --
with a month of special on-air activity and public openings throughout
January.
The historic building, perched above the Atlantic at Britains most southerly point, first opened on January 1 1901, becoming one of the worlds earliest commercial wireless telegraphy stations and enabling ships up to 80 miles
away to communicate with land for the first time. Just weeks later, on
January 23 1901, the station achieved a ground-breaking feat: receiving a wireless signal sent from St Catherine's Point on the Isle of Wight -- conclusive proof that radio waves could follow the curvature of the Earth.
The breakthrough paved the way for Guglielmo Marconi's landmark transatlantic transmission from Poldhu later that same year, establishing the foundations
of long-distance radio communication.
Today, the site remains a living piece of radio history. Cared for by the National Trust and run by dedicated volunteers, the station still operates as an amateur radio hub, connecting visitors and radio enthusiasts with the very landscape where pioneering experiments once took place.
Thomas Morgan is asking County Hall for permission to erect a
free-standing mast to the rear of Romaldor, his home in the north of Wroxall, next to the Isle of Wight National Landscape.
The Radio Society of Great Britain, the national group representing amateur radio operators and which Mr. Morgan is a member, has written in support of
his application.
Its letter to the council said the applicant is 'properly licensed' by the governments communications services regulator, Ofcom. "From the earliest days of radio, amateurs have been in the forefront of developing the use of the radio spectrum," it said. "This includes not only the art of broadcasting world-wide either by satellite or shortwave transmission or space communications, but also for making advances in the development of radio techniques which itself includes valuable work on radio propagation
research." "If an amateur is to participate fully in the activities envisaged in his license, it is essential for him to be granted permission to erect an efficient and properly sited aerial system."
BUT ten members of the public have spoken out against the bid - watch this space.
NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT ... MAYBE
With the old year ended and a new year starting up, it might seem to some of
us that time is out of sorts. Well, it actually WAS out of sorts in the
US - in Boulder, Colorado, home of the F-4 atomic clock that delivers the official time with precision, right down to the microseconds.
Kent Peterson KCDGY from NewsLine explains.
"A storm-related power cut by the electric utility serving the Boulder campus of the National Institute of Standards and Technology caused a drift in time
of 4 millionths of a second in the official time-keeper, the F-4 atomic
clock. Those moments are immeasurable and of little importance to most of us
- except for those who rely on precision in data centres, global positioning systems, aerospace, telecommunications and the Network Time Protocol service, the timing resource for computer systems.
In the wake of the storm, Jeff Sherman, the physicist who maintains the
atomic clocks, reported in a mailing-list post on Google groups that [quote]: "The atomic ensemble time scale at our Boulder campus has failed due to a prolonged utility power outage." [endquote]
By some reports, then, in late December, time literally stood still --
however briefly -- until the switch was made to a backup generator. That
cost the F-4 atomic clock its accuracy.
Anticipating the storm with winds of hurricane strength, the NIST had previously advised users to connect to redundant systems at other campuses
such as WWV/Fort Collins Colorado, or Gaithersburg, Maryland which would
remain unaffected.
This is Kent Peterson KCDGY.
As for the F-4 atomic clock in Boulder, the time discrepancy was resolved
with the clock's recalibration after power was back on by Sunday, December 21st. It was, of course, --------- just a matter of time.
Also a matter of time is just how long the "leaning tower of Goodland" will remain standing.
This long-time AM station in northwest Kansas is off the air after wind gusts exceeding 80 mph left its tower leaning. Licensed to Goodland, KLOE(AM) broadcasts on 730 kHz with 1 kW daytime and just a meagre20 watts at night.
It transmits from a single tower.
According to owner Kyle Bauer, two of the four insulators supporting the
tower broke during high winds that swept through Kansas late on the afternoon of Dec. 18. A third insulator broke days later.
Jared Isaacman was finally confirmed as NASAs 15th administratorheres to
hoping theres a reasonable chunk of NASA left for him to administer.
As mentioned here on WIA NATIONAL NEWS last week, President Trump signed the Ensuring American Space Superiority executive order which effectively ends
the National Space Council (consolidating under the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy) and puts ambitious dates on numerous goals: an American Moon landing (2028), the starts of a lunar base including a nuclear surface reactor (2030), a Golden Dome test (2028), a pathway for commercial
ISS replacement by 2030, and more
Although International Reply Coupons, or IRCs, are still being used by some DX-chasing hams in their requests for QSL cards, that option is set to end by this time next year. Countries belonging to the Universal Postal Union have voted to discontinue their use effective 31 December 2026. The vote was taken in September at the 28th Universal Postal Congress held in Dubai. There are a number of IRCs already in circulation that bear the expiration date of 31 December 2025 and they are expected to be honoured for another year.
In an era marked by a migration toward confirmations on digital platforms and in digital QSOs, the move brings an already disappearing amateur radio
practice to its conclusion. A statement from the Universal Postal Union said the sunset of the IRC, first put into practice in 1907, was [quote] a natural progression within the broader transformation of international postal
services in alignment with the digital practices and modern outlook of their customers. [Endquote]
Moody Bible Institutes 90.1 WMBI(FM) in Chicago is currently operating at 10
kW transmitter power output due to interference with communication equipment
at nearby Chicago OHare International Airport. The flagship station of the Moody Radio network, WMBI ordinarily operates with 100 kW ERP.
The issue stems back to November. The station went off the air completely
after being notified by the FCC that the Federal Aviation Administration detected an aspect of its 90.1 FM signal causing minor interference with
local air traffic control.
Moody said that the FAA recently introduced communications that are highly sensitive to background noise. As a result WMBI must filter out spurs as low
as 80 dB at 133 MHz.

WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- ASTRONOMY (and Wireless Weather)
A new view of the Milky Way has been revealed by capturing different radio frequencies, showing where stars are born and where they are dying
details not normally visible to the naked eye or through astrophotography.
The GLEAM survey, short for Galactic and Extragalactic All-sky MWA, is a
radio astronomy project that mapped the entire sky visible from Western Australia using the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) telescope.
The survey looked at radio waves from space to study galaxies, stars,
supernova remnants, and other cosmic objects that cannot be seen withregular telescopes.
Silvia Mantovanini is a PhD student at Curtin University's International
Centre for Radio Astronomy Research.
She spent 18 months and more than 40,000 hours using supercomputers at the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre to process data from the GLEAM survey andcreate the image.
Ms Mantovanini said stars were dying and being born all the time.
"We always have new stars that are merging with others or interacting with other objects in the sky, and then slowly they go to die," she said.
Ms Mantovanini said the image was a reflection of the past from a long time ago.

Launch Teams Practiced Artemis 2 Countdown
In a prelude to the real deal, the four astronauts of the Artemis 2 mission boarded their Orion spacecraft inside the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Centre on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 20.
The three Americans and one Canadian participated in a launch day rehearsal referred to as the countdown demonstration test or CDDT. It was the first opportunity for everyone involved with the mission to be on hand and to go through the motions of the big day with the fully integrated rocket in the loop, instead of just data simulations.
The launch of Artemis 2 is currently slated for no earlier than February 6. NASA also says the launch will take place no later than April 2026.
