Prove you've worked out the rule by adding another example:

two, four, and six are all OK, one, three, and five aren't.
love and empathy are OK, lust and bigotry aren't.
zinc and radium are OK, nickel and chrome aren't.
hourly and daily are OK, weekly and monthly aren't.
maids and knaves are OK, kings and queens aren't.
wheat and maize are OK, barley and corn aren't.

We are no longer hunters and nomads. No longer awed and frightened, as we have gained some understanding of the world in which we live. As such, we can cast aside childish remnants from the dawn of our civilization.
