Marco can be fun, especially with that focal length!

'Macro' is the term for extreme close-up photography. It is also a term
used in computing, for a commonly repeated series of commands.
'Micro' is the naming convention Nikon use to label their macro lenses.
It is also a prefix to indicate smallness.
'Marco' is the Italian,Spanish, and Portuguese equivalent of the English name Mark. A famous Marco was a Venetian sailing explorer, and another
is a Trump sycophant.

I already knew what macrophotography is
And I know that the lens you bought is NOT a macro lens

scroll down to the bit that says "Maximum Reproduction Ratio" - which is quoted as 1:2
that means that if the image on the film was twice as large, then it
would be a macro lens
While you are there, if you <CTRL F> and search for the word "macro" on
the whole page you will find that it occurs 3 times - none of them in connection with this lens
also, the bit that says "Close Focus = 2.34 feet - 0.71 meters" is a bit
of a clue
The lens is not described as a macro, not labelled as a macro and was
not sold as a macro - so who is being misled ?

what is the definition of macrophotography for film cameras ?
Macro photography (sometimes called macrophotography) refers to photographing very small subjects so they appear life-size or larger on
the film.
For film cameras specifically, the definition is tied to something
called the reproduction ratio (or magnification ratio):
1:1 magnification (true macro): The subject is recorded on the film at
its actual size
Greater than 1:1: The subject appears larger on the film than in real life Below 1:1 (e.g., 1:2): Often called close-up photography, not true macro

If you believe that 'macro' has to be 1:1, then 'as you like'.
Reading the Rockwell page I see, specifically in relation to this lens:
"Superb as a low-cost FX macro lens, too."
"Not the best lens for macro product shots due to lateral color fringing
at close distances. The current 200mm f/4 AF-D is far superior, and
oddly, this AI-s lens has no problems at normal non-macro distances"
"It's a great lens for anything, however if you're shooting products
with black-and-white graphics in the closest macro range and looking closely, you'll see some red-blue color fringing on sharp outlines at
the sides."

I dont think its "as I like"
It would appear to be as everybody except you likes - including Nikon,
who never marketed it as a macro lens
Piss on my parade as much as you like, but I can get reasonable quality
and size close-focussed shots from a greater distance than with my 105.
Well, me and Ken Rockwell it seems. Whatever.
