Bill, if you see this could you give me some info about your Starlink.
How are the speeds- was it easy to set up and get working?
My current provider keeps having problems - too many customers without
upgrading the hardware?-a My speeds have dropped about 70% and all I'm
getting is promises, but no reduction in cost ar faster speeds.
Thanks, Jerry O.
Damn Bill, good to hear from you again.
I got mine years ago, but as I remember, it was easy to set up. Much has probably changed since then, and I'd suggest you ask sticks or Ted. I
think they have been messing with it recently.
I'd be happy to give my opinion on this.
First off, all this for residential use depends on where you live and
what else is available in your area. For example, my 87 year old mother
is always looking for ways to lower her costs because of her limited
income mostly. She was using cable TV and internet connection from
whatever her local provider was, I think it was Comcast. I looked into
it and ended up getting her a T-Mobile hotspot router since it was
available in her area. I think I pay $50/month for it. Unlimited data
and it is super reliable having never gone out in over a year now.
Speeds are very good, but I don't recall exactly what they are. You
just plug in the small modem/router combo and hook up to it. Even a
cave man could do it. If this was available where I live on about 10
miles away, I would get rid of Spectrum and use them. The only downside
for me to do this is I would lose the email addresses I have had for
over 25 years now. I think some of the other big companies are also
doing these hotspot modems and it would be worth checking into them to
see if there is coverage in your area. They all are basically a 5G
hotspot that gets signal from their local towers. These are a good
option and T-Mobile has been affordable and dependable. I just added
her to our YouTube TV account and let her share that so she has no costs
now for internet and TV.
I helped a friend with Starlink for his home. He is out in the country
and options were limited. Installation and setup is simple, but you do
have to have a panel mounted somewhere and get the cable into the house.
After that, it's again just hooking up to it like any other wifi
network. Speeds are also very good, but again I don't recall exactly
what they are. I might use it again next week and I'll check my speeds
if I do and report back. The two downsides to Starlink are current availability and cost. You go to their site and do a check if you can currently get it in your area. It is a little more expensive than
others, but is mainly for people who have no other options. My setup is
for RVing. I pole mount it on my RV. Right now I have it paused for $5/month. If I have no cell service to hotspot with from my phone, I
unpause the service and use that. You also do not get an email account
so you have to take care of that elsewhere. But my friend is very happy
with his Starlink at home after years and years of difficulty getting
internet access.
damn. I just realized that sticks is now probably going to jump in my
shit for polluting the group with talk that's not related to RVing -
unless you're going to use it for RVing.
Come on Bill, you must have me confused with someone else. I will admit
I like it better if the posts are MOSTLY about RVing, but in a group of friends like we have here I have not seen a problem with off-topic stuff
and don't remember complaining about it. I had to filter out that
TechnoBoob because his ridiculous constant postings of offensive to me lifestyle shit like drag queen story hour and the likes that irritated
me. Then there was that idiotic Bob who did nothing but post insults.
He was simply too dumb to realize just how ridiculous he sounded, so he
too got filtered. But I have really enjoyed this group, though I wish
there were a few more players. Remember Carol? I guess we scared her
off because we didn't try her cooking recipes and preferred to just
throw a burger or steak on the grill.
Anyway, don't disappear so long this time. We like hearing from you.
