• routing when travelling

Okay, I've been using Google Maps on my Samsung S25 (and Android
Auto for dash display) for navigation on trips for years. My
preference is to stay off the interstates, especially when towing.
This is partly because I find US and state highways much more
interesting, and also usually less hectic. If towing, there's
also the factor that I'm hindering traffic if it's heavy.

Google maps does a fair job when I pick "Avoid highways" routing
mode, but sometimes it takes us onto really small (and sometimes
windy) county roads. Looking online, it seems that Mapquest has
closer to the functionality I'd like, but the reviews suggest a
    recent update ruined the app.

Another option I've seen is to use avoid highways on Google maps,
but to add a few stops along the way that force it onto US
highways. THis sounds like the best option for me, but I'm
wondering what experience others have had with Mapquest?

Haven't used Mapquest or Google maps at all, so can't help you there. I
have used the Mercedes built in GPS, but I've found I like using Carplay
and my phone better using Apple Maps. I've always found them to be
pretty good, and when I choose a route they stick to it, and only notify
you if there is a closure or something.
