Going down for a 3 night stay to an area I lived in for a couple years
when I was younger. Back almost 50 years ago, the St. Joe lead mine
went out of business and the site was so huge they couldn't pay land
taxes and decided to donate it to the State. It was in its infancy when
I was there, and it was a crazy place. They had these huge cliff like
areas guys on motorcycles would try and get to the top. I would sit out
there for hours watching the show. Actually tried one place on my Honda
750 and got about 2% up the hill before it went on its side and I had to
get help turning it around to get down. Hilarious stupid kid I was.

Now, they've made it into this huge OHV/ATV and off road bicycle park
with a nice campground. I will be alone on this trip, which should work
out nicely to explore what the place has grown into. Plus I can drive
the Jeep in the tailings area and have a little fun with that. Looking forward to this little trip.

Well that one is in the books. Had a really good time and the weather
turned out to be just fine during my stay. Place is completely
different than when I was there 50 years ago, and the upgrades are good.
Campground was very nice with very good sized spots. Didn't use the bathroom facilities, but they looked just fine. Place was much quieter
than I expected with all the off road vehicles. Heard it does get busy
most weekends, and by Friday it was getting more people. Had a good
time going out on the trails with the Jeep. They don't bother you at
all out on the trails, and though they say the wooded areas are off
limits for 4x4's like mine, they don't care. If you can get through
there, you can try. I was impressed with the jeep after finding out
what it can do, and look forward to getting it out west.

Fire pits were great, but the wood was a little green. Once you get it
going it was OK and I did have a fire every night there. Got fortunate
to have over 90% moons and the nights were nice and quiet there. Not
much light either from the park, though one annoying camper had those
blue lights and left them on all night. I hate that. It was all in all
a good time away that I really needed. Now I gotta get the next one
    planned.

I remember seeing some guys do that hill/cliff climb thing, long
ago. It was probably almost 60 years ago. I can't imagine trying
that kind of thing on a 750, yow!

    Sounds nice.

Oh that was a surprise. Having lived in Nebraska for a good
portion of my life, "St. Joe" led me to expect something on the
    other side of Missouri!

But had no pics. So here's a few:

Sites were very nice for RV's. This was a pull through site. The room
is nice for leaving too as I hook the Jeep all up the night before and
then after packing up the RV, I just have to turn on the brake and away
we go. The one shows me coming back in from driving and the place
    pretty empty.

The default steak and beans dinner. I decided to be on a health kick
and had some mediterranean veggies too.

Some pics of the Off Road area. I didn't hike at all on this trip, but
there are trails all over the area and also a p[aved bike trail that
goes around the whole thing I believe.
