I play the lotto 5 times a week with a friend. I tried explaining why I
think the situation I'm gonna tell is funny to my wife, but I'm not sure
    she understood. Here goes.

So I go in to get $20 worth of lotto tickets. I also have a $2 winner
to be taken care of. I tell the girl I have a winner and would also
like $20 worth of tickets. She goes to the lotto terminal and has the
machine generate the tickets, and also checks the winning ticket and
finds it is a $2 winner. She walks back to the register and sees I have placed a $20 bill on the counter for payment. 9 times out of 10 this
person then asks if I want to put the winnings toward the tickets. I
always say, "What?" and make her repeat it. When she does, I simply say
that what I want is my $20 worth of lotto tickets and for her to give me
$2 change. She looks confused for a minute and eventually does what I
asked her to do. Happens all the time.

Some people might think this is normal, or not understand why I find it
to be a problem if this is the way some people think. I'm not saying
these kind of people are stupid, but they're certainly not the sharpest
    knife in the drawer.

I run into that same thing from time to time. It used to bother
me a bit, but I've (mostly) come to accept that some people just
    think differently and that's okay.

I most often encounter this difference when giving an extra amount
of cash over the total so I can get back a reduced amount of
change (or fewer $1 bills). For example, if the total due is
$4.77 I may give the clerk $5.02 to get back only a quarter. At
times I have to explain it. On the other hand, I enjoy it when
the clerk stops for a moment, and then I can see the light go off
    in their head.

    You're a kind person.....I'm working on that

Yes, exactly! If you can't do this kind of thing easily, why are you
    working at a cash register??

Well, sometimes kind. I've been working on it for decades, so
    there's been progress. :)

For the record, my natural tendency is to think that folks who
struggle to do such relatively simple math are not the sharpest
knives in the drawere--like you do. On the other hand, when I
think about it some more, I wonder how much of that is due to
limits on native intelligence and how much on upbringing and
education quality. In any case, I'm blessed in this regard.
