I spent the weekend, with help from Ellen K., moving massfilc.org to new hosting. Previously a fan provided hosting to us and other fannish organizations, but he decided it was time to get out of that hobby. He
gave us plenty of notice.

We settled on Panix, which has a decades-long reputation as a
geek-friendly service provider. Things went about as smoothly as such
things ever do. Hopefully anyone not paying close attention won't notice
the difference.

Can you define "geek friendly" because although I know there's so very little hope of escaping godaddy someday, I might be able to at some point.

What I meant is that they give you access to shell accounts and other
tools to have full control over your account. If you want a host where
you just add content and they take care of everything else, and you
don't care so much about FTP, .htaccess, and the fine details of HTML, a different service could be better.

With Panix when something is wrong you can pick up the telephone and call
the support office and say "the /var partition on panix2 is overflowing"
and they will log in and fix it while you are on the phone because you
are talking to an actual technical person who not only knows something
about computers but has been delegated enough power by the organization to
fix them.

It's like the way ISPs were back in the early nineties before the internet
went wrong.

I'll have to look into them, because customer support is everything although partitions overloading is slightly above my paygrade. I can create websites, use ftp, etc. But once you get into super technical complicated stuff, I have never been in situations where I have to learn them. I maintain my websites and go about my business. I don't do them for a living, so there is that. Still, you never know where things will lead you.

Godaddy doesn't do everything for you, but their tools at the time made it easier for me to do the things. They weren't that horrible back then, as they are now. But finding a good server that I can transfer the comic to is easier said than done, as the current version is built on Wordpress which doesn't transfer so easily.
