In June [of 1974], Sundown hit the number 1 spot on the Billboard
and Cashbox charts, while the title track simultaneously topped the
singles charts. It was a rare double-pinnacle feat, one that catapulted Lightfoot into superstardom, boosting every aspect of his career, from
record and ticket sales to media coverage and venue size -- even the
number of groupies waiting for him backstage. Sundown eclipsed Paul
McCartney & Wings' "Band on the Run" and Lightfoot relished beating one
of the ex-Beatles. "I remember we knocked McCartney out of first place.
That's as close as I got to catching up to those guys, because they
were always there, and you had to compete against them."
