We roamed over the vast grounds. Whenever we ran into a [Playboy]
Bunny, she kept suggesting that we visit Hefner's zoo and see the
llamas. Finally we went into the mansion and Hefner came down from his bedroom. He was wearing pajamas and was surrounded by Bunnies -- one on
each arm, with others trailing behind him. "Welcome," he said, "All of
the facilities are yours. Make yourself at home."

We went to the Grotto, the large, steamy jacuzzi that Hefner had
built for nude bathing. Everyone kept wondering whch of us would
undress and swim in the nude. I knew I wouldn't. John suddenly got the
idea that it was time for Harry to take a bath. Like a mischievous kid,
he whispered in our ears that on the count of three, we all should toss
Harry into the water. John whispered, "One...two...three!" and suddenly
we pounced on him and tossed him in. Harry splashed around happily.
Then Cher climbed to the top of the rocks.

"It's so steamy in here," she said, "I've lost an eyelash."

Cher doesn't mention Pang at all though, ostensibly because Pang is
still alive. I presume they're both talking about the same visit or was

She gives the impression that Lennon was underwhelmed by the whole
experience. She says that afterward, Lennon went on sarcastically about
how impressed he was by Hefner because of the overabundance of ashtrays
in his mansion, each of which supposedly boasted an active pipe.

I take it Cher was too classy to strip down herself and get in the
pool, if she had Hef and everybody else in the mansion would've

However, I don't see Cher's appeal in general.

Someone like Dale Bozzio -- she wasn't a real vocalist, but I can how

RFK, the Tate murders and the Santa Rosa earthquake that October (we

Yeah, we've talked about your time there. I still enjoyed visiting the
Bay Area as late as the 2000s -- but it was still a place abounding in
great bookstores, music (recordings and instrument) shops, inexpensive-yet-amazing restaurants, coffee shops and quality beer bars.

Most of the venerable old places I loved -- Haight Music, the Caffe Meditteraneum, Shakespeare Books -- are long-gone.

I'm reading two books that deal with the Kennedies: Jack Olsen's The
Bridge At Chappaquiddick and Peter Jannay's Mary's Mosaic, about Mary
Pinchot Meyer's relationships, which included an intimate one with JFK
and a friendship with Timothy Leary. (You ab guess what she had turned
to Leary for.)

It's disturbing to read, in Olsen's book, about the extent of Joseph
Kennedy Sr's control over his sons. In fact, I'm learning from the book
about Meyer that she is one of the few women involved with JFK was not
merely used by him for sex. She was the dominant person in the
relationship, viewing Kennedy as a broken man in need of help, having
been pushed into politics against his will. She had requested LSD from
Timothy Leary so that she could take the drug with Kennedy, hoping
(having faith in Leary's promises of the drug's supposed benefits) to
make him happier.

Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski actually lived on Palisades Beach Road
for a time, before moving to the Chateau Marmont (where she was happy
but he wasn't) and then to Cielo Drive.

Peter Lawford's former house, where Lennon lived with May Pang, Keith
Moon, Harry Nilsson, Ringo and others was on the same beautiful (back
then anyway) stretch -- albeit years later than Tate had, obviously.
