    He was writing about the issue of child abuse in his online journal at
    that time.

    He also dealt with that theme in his autobiography and interviews.

    It's in the Who's songs from practically the beginning.

    No indication ever appeared that he had done anything inappropriate with
    young people. His known relationships are all normal.

    On balance, the "research" defense holds up.
