OK, let's give it a try. But it certainly a guess. If I have as many
four in the right place, I would be surprised. If I have all wrong -
that would not be surprising at all.

You got eight out of ten correct!
I hope you're duly surprised!!

My hypothesis is that the table
reflects the GDP in different years

Yes. The "NA"s associated with Russia might help to calibrate the dating.

Not so very long ago this country-- in the news recently -- briefly had
the 10th largest economy in the world. Why has it fallen on hard times?
...
Why did this small European country boom in recent decades, now
having a GDP on a par with larger countries like Belgium and Sweden?

Your questions seem IR-relevant. To wit, you seem to be asking about
IRan and IReland.
At the bottom of the list, it's more difficult since I don't know
which ones you left out. The inclusion of Taiwan and Thailand looked
like a hint, so that is why I tried Vietnamn.
As for Venezuela and Iran, they share a similar fate. And a GNP which
is largely depenedent on raw materials.
Would you all prefer to see more puzzles like this? Or fewer?
