These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2025-11-17,
    and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Cellar Rats, and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation of
current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting
of other rounds. For further information please see my 2026-03-10
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition

Argentina-France (2-2 at full time, 3-3 after overtime and Argeninta

    1986

    10. What nation famously knocked out Italy in the group stage of
the 2002 World Cup after a very controversial match featuring

Something's wrong here. Italy did qualify from the group stage in
2002, to eventually lose in the round of 8 or the quarter finale
against South Korea (which might be the answer the quiz master had
    in mind.)

I recall that I saw posters in the audience that reminded of the events
in 1966, when Italy indeed was kicked out already at the group stage,
where they also lost against a Korean team. But that was North Korea.

    * Game 9, Round 2 - Geography - Geographical Saints:

These are place names that each honor a saint. In each case,
give the place name as customarily used in English.

    1. Though this site has been occupied for thousands of years,
the city itself was founded by the Spanish in 1610. Not only is
it the oldest city to be a state capital in the US, it also has
the highest elevation of any state capital. Which city is it?

Santa Fe (New Mexico). 4 for everyone -- Joshua, Erland, Dan Blum,
    Dan Tilque, and Pete.

Or in full, La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de As0s --
"The Royal Town of the Holy Faith of St. Francis of Assisi". As
    Dan Tilque noted, "Fe" is not, as the preamble said, a saint's name;
but Francis is, so I think this one still qualifies.

    2. This volcanic tropical island is in the South Atlantic Ocean
is 4,000 km (2,500 miles) east of Rio de Janeiro and 1,950 km
(1,210 miles) west of the Cunene River, which forms part of
the border between Namibia and Angola. What is its name?

St. Helena. 4 for Joshua, Erland, Dan Blum, and Dan Tilque.

Sao Tome is only about 200 miles west of mainland Africa.

    3. This island is part of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles
of the West Indies. It and its neighboring island form a country
and are separated by a shallow channel known as the Narrows.

St. Kitts (and Nevis). 4 for Joshua, Erland, and Pete.

St. Vincent is in the Windward Is. and does not fit the rest of the
    description either.

    4. The city named after a saint is the capital and largest city
of Chile as well as one of the largest cities in the Americas.

Santiago. (After St. James.) 4 for everyone.

    5. This American city was founded in 1764 by French fur traders
Pierre Lacl*de and Auguste Chouteau, and named after a canonized
French king. What is the city?

St. Louis. (After King Louis IX.) 4 for Joshua, Erland, Dan Blum,
    and Dan Tilque.

    6. This Quebec town on the St. Lawrence River is known for its
basilica and pilgrimages. The first church was built by sailors,
