No idea yet, but the medium would suggest something like retro cyberpunk,
or maybe some deep space exploration?
Vernor Vinge's *Fire upon the Deep* has quite obvious references to
usenet. (if you don't know it and like Sci-Fi, I highly recommend it).
That is not something that I am familiar with, although it might be OK if that is what most players (and GM) intend. However, my other question would be: what system would be used? (I am familiar with GURPS, and I can learn others if I have the rules available; I have rules for Genesys and for some other systems as well. I also have all of the GURPS Spaceships books; you mention deep space exploration and GURPS Spaceships can be used for that (together with Eric B. Smith's optional rules, which have some other useful rules such as Energy Bank).)
GURPS would be my preference too, as I'm running a realtime GURPS
campaign right now. I don't know those Energy Bank rules, but I guess
that's secondary right now.
From my experience, complex rules are not a problem in pbm games. What's problematic is combat, because it plainly sucks to have a few seconds of
combat drag out over two weeks. So we might think about some alternative resolution should that become an issue. General time rate is something
I'm always interested in. Our current game runs at 'month in game per
real time week'.
If it should be a fantasy game, we could breathe some firey life into alt.dragons-inn and make it our in game tavern 8-)
And as we're talking GURPS, how about an Infinite Worlds Game? That
would allow for mechanized mercenaries showing up in the dragons-inn and
elves and orcs checking into cyber space ... options aplenty :)
Let's see who else shows interest.
Cheers,
lkh
