For sure - I was once horribly lost in the situation where the other
guy was desperately short on time (and I'm pretty sure I'm a good
enough speed player to have survived that scramble though I seldom get
that close to flagging) so I decided to hang in there and 2 moves
before the control he made a hideous blunder that didn't win instantly
but left me with a protected passed pawn that I was able to convert.
And he was an experienced enough player to understand why I hadn't
resigned so it was nice that he wasn't at all mad with me though in
fairness it WAS the kind of position a strong A player should have
been able to make control without destroying his position even at 5 or
10 sec per move.
Throughout the last 20 moves my attitude was "I'm busted - I know I'm
busted but maybe he'll do something terrible during the time scramble
- I can always resign later..."
