• A lucky guess

Here, there are only two candidate plays but I had no real idea
whether to go greedy or safe.
I guessed right but it really was a guess.
In fact during the review, I was expecting to be penalised.
There is a fair amount of equity at stake here with the wrong
    play losing 0.04.
Wouldn't it be good if there was an expert reader of this forum
who knows about the issues here and who could explain to me
how to make the decision reliably rather than guessing?

Since I'm mathematically oriented, I wonder if there's someone
here who has a particular interest in mathematical games
(of which backgammon could be said to be one) and who has
contributed to journals of combinatorial game theory.?

I think that if you have one checker closed out, then the only time
you would clear the 5pt instead of the 6pt with 5x is if x=1 and
you don't have a spare on the 4pt, as in the position below.

At gammon go, you can occasionally find a position where it's a bit
    better to clear the 5pt.

    Thanks, Tim.
Presumably the closer the gammon percentage is to 50, the better the greedy plays are.
Here, it's a significant error to play greedy even though the gammon percentage is
    uncannily close to 50/50.
So yes, it must be rare -- I didn't know that.
It's quite common to give yourself a positional weakness to increase your gammon count
    but maybe not this way.
