I was at Safeway today and the old guy in front of me was pretty confused. His wife
had given him a card and he could not remember the pin. After a few tries, he was
able to reach his wife on the cell. She gave him the pin and for some reason, it
didn't go through. After a few more tries, the checkout gal was getting pretty pissed and the guy was so flustered that he froze. I pulled out a twenty and said
that I'd pay his for his food. That didn't work and the gal was more pissed. "This
always happens" she said as she canceled his transaction. It was not a good scene.
Now that I think about it, I should have scanned his groceries before offering to
pay for it. I'm not buying any booze to further cloud whatever is left of his mind!
    Am I a bad person?

It was quite a pitiful sight. I felt bad for the guy. Later on, in the parking lot,

call, but not on their own.

About 10 years ago a guy would stand with his "Will Work for Food" sign
at the exit of the shopping center. The exit was on a state road and
    some growth on the side

The state road crew came along one day for the usual grass/weed cutting
as it would be quite high. They uncovered a couple hundred pounds of
food, fresh produce, sandwiches. They did not find any cash.

I have an ipad someone gave me.-a With apple, you must do everything
exactly their way, or no way.-a It's just the way they roll with their
    walled garden.

I don't use my iPad much, but it's handy when traveling. My wife and I
both have iPads with keyboards. The knockoff ones are really cheap,
and it's so much nicer to have a real keyboard. You just have to find
one that matches the generation of your iPad.
    https://www.walmart.com/ip/iPad-10th-Generation-Case-Keyboard-iPad-
    Keyboard-Case-10-9-inch-10th-Gen-Detachable-Pencil-Holder-Flip-Stand-
    Cover-Keyboard-Case-Latest-iPad-10th-Gen/3335018192?
    classType=VARIANT&athbdg=L1900&from=/search
We also both have matching Carhartt cross body bags that are perfect
    for iPads.
    https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/carhartt-crossbody-zip-
    bag-2430248
Mine has a place for a SIM card, so it can be used as a large phone.

Are you sure, and have you actually made a telephone call using ONLY
your ipad?-a If not, try it and let us know how it goes.

I thought ipads, even with cell service still couldn't be used as a
phone to make calls.-a They just use the cell service for data instead of requiring wifi. Or, they can probably use a nearby iphone to make the
call, but not on their own.

There is another layer. It's called WhatsApp. It does use up data, but I
use my phone for phone calls infrequently enough for anyone other than
wife (rarely, as we're almost always together) or son, and because he
travels so much out of the country, we're used to using WhatsApp. The
very few things that I'd need an actual phone for are pretty much just doctor's offices and pharmacies. A couple of my docs only have my wife's number, because she has an iPhone that always works, unlike my cheesy
Android. Or I could get a $8 a month voice and text plan and keep the
Android, or maybe toss it and get a little flip phone. The only texts I
ever get that I have any use for are the multifactor ID, or rarely from
    my son.

I really use my phone almost exclusively for internet or camera. I
posted here from the iPad last spring when we were on vacation, but that needed the hotel's wifi. I communicate with other relatives/friends by
email. This thing looks like me. ;-) https://www.walmart.com/ip/Senior-Flip-Phone-with-Large-Buttons-Dual-SIM-Dual-Standby-1-3MP-Camera-LED-Flashlight-for-Elderly-Users-Easy-Operation/17773718504

Or I could just say fuck it to having a mobile phone. I leave it at home almost half the time, and the times that I regret that are when I want
to use the McD's app, or use WalMart+ scan&go or Sam's gas pumps. It
does mean that I'll have to wear the Carhartt. My wife always has hers,
but often it's not with the iPad. She uses it as a purse, so I guess
mine would be a "man purse," except if anybody called it that, I could
contend that nothing is more manly than Carhartt.
