    Richard, I realize this may be to late to help, but a 3 flute drill will deflect a lot less, and short of a gun drill may be the best tool for deep drilling aluminum with carbide of course being better than HSS.

    I knew this and actually have a couple 3 flute drills for this purpose. I don't have any excuse for failing to mention it, other than I just didn't think of it. Of course you need a suitable maxhine to start it straight. I expect you could use a hand held drill if you have the skill to start it "straight enough."

    Angle irons clamped to both sides and extended out, with a nut clamped
    between them, could guide a drill bit of the nut tap size straight. IIRC an M12 nut may have an 18 or 19mm hex.

    I think I'm coming along with my hand metalworking skill. A 2' long 18 ga
    car rust patch that's all curves and bends fits the surface flush within
    1/8" before pulling it tight with the Clecos. The proper equipment is all
    hand tools, like a medieval armorer.

    Several auto shops gave me some willing and some grudging acceptance of my plan to attach the patch with SS rivnuts. Apparently 'normal' people don't take their cars apart to inspect for rust. Normal people also don't fix
    their car, weld, own machine tools or design their own computer, while I
    don't have a shrink on speed dial. You are right, Bob, I don't know very
    many.

    The air drill inlet may be BSPP, I can't measure it like external threads.
    The male thread on the quick disconnect is only 3 threads long and difficult to tell whether it's 60 or 55 degrees, 18 or 19 TPI, which my thread pitch gauge omits.     machine and tell it to re-machine it to match something you have in your
    parts bin. (I actually get customer demands that sound like that

    I would but I gave it the task to invent a new device, and when it searched
    in the future for the solution it got itself into an infinite loop of self-modification. From the sounds it makes I suspect it may have shifted
    the goal to writing a hit Broadway musical about the traumatic lives of singing and dancing robots dressed as cats.

    My answer to those inventors was to ask them to define in numbers what "exactly" means, and explain the time and cost consequences. I never hear a peep again. I've demonstrated how long it takes to center work in a 4-jaw to

    I started playing with Grok, because its the AI that integrates to some
    extent with Tesla (my wife just ordered a Model 3 AWD), and I wanted to
    know it was as retarded as Gemini AI (which is way to integrated with
    Android Auto and has fucked it all to hell). Grok is not terrible. It
    has a political bias, but it backs up its findings with reasoned
    arguments. Its not just wrong, like Gemini AI often is.

    That being said, I had reason to post this today on the CamBam forumss

    I never really understood how Fast Plunge Height in CamBam worked. It
    didn't work how I thought it should so I just left it at -1 and it
    didn't do anything really. Today I set it for .02 (I typically set my
    stock surface at .01 for decking) and it is amazing. I think it may
    save nearly as many hours on some jobs as my low default .05 clearance
    height did.

    It's not perfect, but its a lot better than plunging at the plunge rate
    from clearance height when machining a feature in the bottom of a pocket.

    I needed to do a 3D detail operation in the bottom of a 3D pocket. The
    top of the feature is at about -0.3. Now its rapiding down to -0.28 and
    only slowing to plunge rate for the last .02 inches.

    I know most of you guys have probably had this dialed, but it was not intuitive to me, and I always had something more important to figure out.

    I knew others had been using it so I asked Gemini AI for a better
    description of how the fast plunge height works, and in its mostly
    useless as tits on a stump fashion, it just regurgitate the same
    information as in the CamBam manual. That still doesn't make sense to
    me, so I called it a stupid fucking AI and reminded it I said "better description," not just vomit up the manual I already read. I was
    stunned when it came back with a description of how to achieve usable
    results. It's the most brain damaged of all the AIs, okay Microsoft's
    CoPilot AI may be tied for retardation level, but it actually gave a
    useful description.
