First off this is actual metalworking content.
No, not the big ring in the nose of a killer boar. The soft wire rings
used for making attachments like hanging no trespassing signs on chain
link fence. You crush the hog rings closed around your items with hog
ring pliers. Both are pretty cheap. A few dollars for the pliers and a
few dollars for a hundred rings.
I was fighting with a new pair of pliers trying to attach ID tags to
minnow traps. I didn't make these, but I have in the past. Actually I
was using one ring on the bottom to join two halves so I wouldn't
accidentally put two parts together without an ID tag. Then I used two
rings to secure the ID tag to one of the halves on top. It was not
working. The ends of the ring just didn't stick out of the front of the
jaws. Its not a problem for something like securing a sign to a chain
link fence or even large opening hardware cloth where you can reach all
the way through the opening with the jaws, but on the small opening
hardware cloth these traps are made from it was almost impossible. Very impractical. I decided to waste a ring (they are cheap after all)
watching how it interacts with the pliers. The front 3/16 to 1/4 inch
(5-6mm) of the jaws never actually touched the ring. I just cut that
part off, gave it a quick grind, and now the tips of the ring stick well
past the end of the jaws. Its much easier to install the hog rings now.
Of course the ID tags are CNC machined from aluminum sheet and CNC
engraved a dozen at a time.
