A week or so ago when I opened the garage door to leave for work I saw
what appeared to be a small hawk sitting on the street in front of the
house next door. It flew onto a low hanging branch in a tree across the street when I walked around to get into my car.

When I pulled out of my driveway and drove down the street it was again sitting in the middle of the street, a few houses down. I stopped. Sat
there for a minute. Hello, bird! You really need to move. It looked
at me/my car and hopped a few paces then stopped and looked around. I
edged up. It hopped a bit more. Okay, birdie, I need to get to work.
I didn't want to try to drive around it for fear it would startle and
take off and fly into my car and get injured. I was about to get out
and try to shoo it off the street when it hopped a bit more and flew up
onto another low-hanging branch.

It was very small. Only about 6 inches tall. Definite hooked beak and
short tail feathers. I think it was a recently fledged Sharp Shinned
Hawk. Very nifty to see but please don't sit in the middle of the street!

Reminds me of the time several years back when I was driving down a
country road, a hawk was on the side of the road maybe attending to some roadkill and unfortunately flew up in the direction of my car. I had to
have a turn signal light replaced so I'm pretty sure the lick must have
killed it.

Awww, that's sad. :(

In the Winter (it doesn't get very cold down here) there are often
groups of yellow-rumped warblers (aka butter butts!) on the the streets
in my residential neighborhood. I'm not sure what the heck they are
after in the middle the street since there is no food for them on the
street. I slow down and wait for them to scatter before driving on.
