The real problem with racing on a bike. A crash is pretty much going to
happen if you do it long enough. I guess like the rest of us just riding
are bikes. I would never race a bike in a race looking at in now. Would
    you Andrew?

I did a few track races this year. The track is an old 1/4 mile midget
car racing track, asphalt with I believe 10% banked corners. https://northeastvelodrome.wordpress.com/

Commuting is far more dangerous. Ask me how I know.

    On that note:

    "Crash Details

Incident: Poga-iar was riding near the front of the peloton during a
fast section with roughly 32rCo33 km remaining.

Cause: Reports and video analysis indicate he struck a stone or
rock on the tarmac, causing him to swerve, flip head-over-handlebars,
and trigger a crash that collected other riders like Wout van Aert.

Injuries: He suffered a concussion, a displaced left collarbone
fracture, and a stable C7 cervical (neck) fracture, forcing him to
    abandon his first-ever Grand Tour."

If you review the video, the rock is clearly visible and the front few
riders avoided it. Interestingly, he was in a line behind two of this teammates and neither one pointed it out. I'd be pissed at them if I
were him. That's literally a major function of a domestique.

And in another case of AI being wrong, it wasn't his first-ever grand
tour. It wasn't even his first tour of spain (La Vuelta). It would have
been his first Vuelta win (and yes, he would have won).

In my 40s I decided I wanted to try my hand at racing. Sort of a
mid-life crisis perhaps. My very first race I got ridden off the
edge of the pavement and went down trying to get back on. Broke
my wrist. Once that healed up enough, I rode another half dozen
races, being competitive in a few (Cat 4-5).

Other than that once, I never crashed in races--but I did have a
few in some squirrely group rides. After some serious road rash
and shoulder injuries I decided it wasn't worth mixing it up with
guys half my age (and with at least double the fearlessness).

It was super fun to be extremely fit, but the amount of time it
took to get there was a major hit on my lifestyle.

The problem with most forms of competition is that unless you're
competing at the very highest level, there's always going to be
someone better... Therefore the key to success as an amateur is to
find a group of competitors who you can occasionally beat... not beat
all the time, because what are the bragging rights for beating a bunch
of incompetents who you regularly blow away?

IF Podecar had taken a few flyers is was likely he would have won. But if he was actually riding like a GC rider, I'm not at all sure that he could have outriden Mas. That guy has been relegated to being a support rider and it turns out that he looks to be a BETTER steep climb rider than Podacar. His only weakness is that is that he is crappy at Time Trials. I think that he has enough tome on Roglic to win the Vuelta if he rides like a GC rider and not a climber domestique.
I am quite impressed with his advantage over most others on very steep climbs. --- Synchronet 3.22a-Linux NewsLink 1.2
