You probably used "knit back gloves" as a search term. That works,
but not very well. Instead, try searching for "crochet cycling
gloves":

Everything Tom does is a surprise. In this case, I believe the
problem was Tom using incorrect search terms.
I presume are some local bike
shops to him, I know US cities are built and zoned differently uk has no
zoning laws.
Tom lives in San Leandro, CA. Looks like there are several bicycle
shops near San Leandro.

Trivia: I have a pair of leather and cotton crochet cycling gloves
that are probably 40 years old. I didn't use them much. Instead, I butchered modified canvas work gloves: <https://www.google.com/search?udm=2&q=cotton%20canvas%20work%20gloves>
These were cheap, warm, washable, adequately ventilated and quite comfortable. The local hardware stores stocks them. For cushioning,
I inserted a foam pad into the palm areas. Use closed cell foam or it
will act like a sponge and absorb any sweat.

I've got no use for cycling gloves. I tried a pair and they're too
hard to take off. I use a pair of leather work gloves with just the
tips of the forefingers and thumb cut off so I can work the phone,
computer, and headset. I left tabs on the forefinger and thumb so I
can pull them off. These are essentially the same kind of shoveling
oats and corn, or setting fence posts. I've only started wearing any
gloves recently because my doctor cautioned me about the skin damage
on my arms and hands.

Yes, they fit tightly. That's by design, so they don't move
around and chafe. The intent is that one peels them off from
the base of the palm, leaving them inside out until dry.
Then again, as in all things, ride what you like.

Sort of related: I like the crochet gloves personally, and have two pair
that were unfortunately stored in the presence of some pest (moths?), so
the cotton backs are somewhat perished but the leather palms are still
in good shape. Has anyone any experience repairing this sort of thing?
The crocheting on gloves looks pretty basic to me, but I'm not much of a judge, I learned the basics of crochet long ago, but have forgotten it completely.

Perhaps reading or viewing some repair instructions will refresh your
memory. For example:

"How to mend knitting like a pro!" <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soZoUyV7utw> (27:50)
I don't know anything about crochet mending, but I can use needle and
thread or a sewing machine.

Have a Crochet Hook"

If the damage is minimal and if you don't care what it looks like when
you're done, there's fabric glue. Any fabric glue, that dries
flexible, should work.

They do around here. In fact one thing I've learned from my
time wrenching in a upper end shop (the one where I bought
my Merlin) and hanging around other shops is that the small
stuff is where the profit margin lies for merchandise. Every
shop owner I've ever talked to has stated explicitly you
don't make money selling bikes, and the more expensive the
bike the lower the profit margin. Shops make all their money

You're exactly right, and not unique to our bicycle industry.
In the early 1990s I had a conversation with a camera store
owner about camera pricing*, and he explained that they
tried to cover their invoice cost plus delivery. The margins
on lenses, cases, service etc ran the operation.
*I have never owned an expensive camera. I was buying
