On the Catrike I have rarely cleaned drivetrain. It does not go out in
rain or bad conditions and I have been using the better Teflon lubricant
which does not seem at attract as much gunk. My problem is I was not
lubing the chain very much given on a Catrike it is 3 chains at once.
Hard to know where you even start because you don't have a good eye
    advantage.

I notice the other day that all of a sudden I was not able to back pedal
it seem like the chain coming backwards just was not straight and
smooth. I just assume the derailleur was not sitting exactly right and
fiddled a bit with that. No real luck. Then I manage one morning to
really lube the chain nicely. Good spray going all around getting the
nooks and crannies in all the spots. Even lube the front derailleur as
it just sits there in your face.

Wow all of a sudden the chain easily back pedals smoothly and even not
even the slightest hesitation. Granted we don't backpedal as such but sometimes into corners and just I stop pedal and will backpedal to get
in the right position. A real lesson learned lube the chain deacon.

If you need to know where you have lubricated and where not
    yet, paint your snaplink.
