I don't know what is happening to my 1030. It appears now to have saved my 36 mile ride. It had a full charge and it was reading and displaying the power meter and the heart rate monitor. My speed was about the same as yuesterday and average heart rate would have been a little lower. The distance when turned off was correct and it asked if I wanted it saved and I said yes.But now it isn't showing a ride for today and it is also showing a softwar4e update is going to take a couple of hours.
I hate to lose 36 miles after losoing 30 miles on Tuesday

If you saved the ride, it should still be there. It has a memory for
quite a few rides and the upgrade wouldn't erase it. Check your
manual for how to access the memory.

As long as itrCOs been saved it will be there, you do delete rides after a while? It will run out of space, I do so a few times a year ie as and when itrCOs been a while.

It's there, so why isn't it downloading? I left the history on and opened the app and it came up

Well, it did save it, but it took some coaxing to get it out. But I was finally successful.
I have a Garmin 945 it works flawless never had and issue at all. It is
deadly accurate on distance and anything else really. I have many
options to use different faces and date screens.

The important thing to remember is that Garmin built all this in because things happen. If you go for a ride and then it runs out of battery and
shuts off. The ride is saved in memory Garmin did that on purpose they
knew the crap would happen. It save all the date and stats and will show
up as your last ride in activities. I use the Garmin Connect app on my
    laptop and have do Strava.

When I finish a ride it automatically uploads to Strava when I hit the
save on the watch. If you don't do anything it simply saves it after a
period of time. Again, you must delete the ride and it will even ask you
the confirm that you want to delete the ride.

Garmin remembers rides of the same so if you have a course you do that
is the same it will tell you after the ride on Strava how many times you
have done that particular ride. It does not have to be exactly the same
but I don't know the parameters off they allow.

When I crashed in Sept my Garmin was on the handlebars of the bike. A
friend later got my bike back to his house and brought me the bike with
the Garmin 945 still on the bars. Obvious it was completely dead from
being on for many hours after the crash and my ambulance ride.

When I charged it up sure enough it had the ride on there and the
details and I could see the place the bike went down. Told me how fast I
was going when it crashed and HR. That was not cool to look at.

It will save if the unit crashes or powered off. Like Mark I have my
    accident on Strava!

I used to have an old Garmin touring that was a cut down 800 with reduced features but still had the slow CPU of the era, ie before Wahoo gave them a fright! So could lockup navigating areas that had a lot of data ie busy
    complex urban environments!

Did save the file always but just occasionally it would be corrupted.

The 830/530 was GarminrCOs answer and frankly is fine, I possibly may need a larger screen in time but the features etc are fine!
