    cyclists.

Comments as ever should be taken with large amounts of salt!

This said to compare to London, NewYork which has similar populations,
though London has a slightly higher cycling mode share.

Both have an increase in casualties ie not just fatalities, which are
likely to be linked to motor vehicles I believe same is true for
pedestrians, which would track for motor vehicles being the cause for
    whatever reason.

I can only remember two pedestrian fatalities in london in the last decade
or so, one was someone doing laps of Regents Park, who collided with an
    older lady.

The other was a dump lad on a fixie without any brakes, who rode recklessly
and killed a woman crossing the road, he was taken to court and jailed, he
was dumb enough to post some unapologetic posts to one of the forums at the time, so wasnrCOt surprising that he was found guilty.

That New York has a repeated number of fatalities of pedestrians from cyclists/e bikes/e motos is poor, clearly be rather less than motor
    vehicles, but even so.

It appears that New York has a similar e bike speed assistance, ie 15mph
though IrCOd guess still allowing throttles which arenrCOt legal in UK, which makes the enforcement easier, are such things as walk mode on E MTB so the
bike will drive slowly up unridable climbs so you donrCOt have to lug a 20+
    KG up!

Well, yes and no. Statutes notwithstanding, the actual
vehicles on New York streets are very capable electric
motorcycles, lawful "e-bicycles" being a distinct minority.

My friend has an e-bike from Specialized that doesn't kick in until a certain amount of power is being expended and this is a true electric assist. Or so he says.

ThatrCOs just a torque sensor e bike, which the better/more expensive e bikes particularly E MTBrCOs use, depending on where would have a speed limiter to the assist, cheaper. E bikes can surge when you touch the pedal or even
kick them which is generally tedious.

That would be quite different to London if true, most e-bikes are very
much legal as they are hire bikes, be that the Boris bikes that have docks
or the dock-less ones, the illegal ones, do see particularly used by
    delivery riders.

They are tolerated, though clearly if they advertise themselves they will
get the bike impounded, fined and not able to work for a while, so itrCOs in their interest to not advertise themselves that the police will take a interest.

DonrCOt see that many legal privately owned E bikes for commuting or utility bar cargo bikes that near 100% are, generally used by mum for the school
run, but cost and distance/speed are factors, London has a healthy number
of cycle commuters that cycle from the outer suburbs to central, such folks
the average or at least mean speed is high enough that a E bike makes
little difference, as your riding along above the cut off point of
assistance, my average tends to be lower than the cut off unlike some of
the faster folks I know. But even so significant periods IrCOd be over the limit.

Hence on the roadie I do tend to pass the legal and the not so legal E
bikes, the E motos with the fat tyres IrCOve found look and sound like they
are going faster than they are.
