The infection in my ear seems to gone, although whatever the doctor
put in there is still rendering me deaf in that ear. It's still sore
enough that I can't sleep with that ear down on the pillow, which is
my preferred position. 2.5 weeks to next DR appointment. Hoping it'll
be all cleared up and I can get on with the other medical evaluations
    I've been putting off.

I'm building my cycling mojo back slowly after my six weeks off. Today
I did 27.5 miles with no problems and wasn't particularly worn out at
the end. I should have pushed it to 30.

Always good when you finish and could have done more. Sometimes going to
the limit works against the you and the body. I was looking a Zillow
houses around Ocala and Lake City but looking at benefits even Georgia
    would be good.

I always think about moving because taxes are high in Illinois highest property taxes in US. My son in Tampa but he could be anywhere in the
future so until he settles in that would not be a target as such.
Getting out of the cold and just doing something in a different place.
My house is too big for me but the market around here is crazy. I can
sell but not really buy and downsize. For me to downsize I have to jump
    ship to another state.

The whole nature of Central Illinois has change over the past 40 years.
It went from a conservative small corn palace to a liberal awakening.
The Dems control the entire state and nothing can stop them that I can
see. I am not saying specifically about my politics but more about
reality. I can be quite liberal about some things and real conservative
    about others.

To me Chicago has become the drain of the rest of the state. At one time
is was an Iconic city with many cool things. Now it is a mess with crime
and problems that keep the cool things from happening. I would gladly
take what goes on in Indiana. We are taxed to the max to keep the
corrupt in there big sky places and power.

Illinois is actually#2, New Jersey is consistently #1 and has been for
many many years. Not that that should make you feel any better.

Have you thought of Indiana temporarily? that should cut your property
taxes in half, and only an hour drive.

Wisconsin was indeed better, but we're sledding down a slick
    slope now.

Clashes between city, suburban, and rural politics is going to get
    worse before it gets better.

26 years ago I sold my home on 36 acres in rural Dane County Wisconsin
and bought a boat in Florida to live on. I can't imagine what the
taxes are on that place is now.

Just search your old address. The various realty sites list
nearly every parcel (currently for sale or not) with
    assessment and taxes.

My small 1914 house, which was taxed $700 when I bought it
was $4500 when I sold ten years ago. Same house, just older.

    It's now $8600.

I just looked up a house that recently sold around where I ride my
Trike. The house value on Zillow is $598,000 and the current taxes are
$13,000 a year. That is nuts and ridiculous because if you own the place
is cost over $1000 a month not counting any utilities or house
insurance. Add house insurance of about $2500 year you are looking a a
serious payment even if you own the house. Granted it is a nice house
better than most but not some wealthy castle. An upper middle class home
and not within driving distance of any mountain view or ocean. The
winters are cold and damp, the summer is hot and humid, and the wind

    It's complex.

Agricultural land is taxed at a much lower rate. So someone
    has to pay more.

And if you notice in the detail in your tax bill, the bulk
of the revenue goes to your local school system. Some are
ridiculously inept while yet shamelessly profligate while
    others are less horrible.

Dane County update, his just in.

For 2025 there were 72 reportable car-deer crashes (most are
not reported) in Dane County, making it #1 among Wisconsin
    counties. Six dead humans.

Folks in Dane county spend a lot of time and money on expensive deer
food, don't you know. They grow acres and acres of it in neat little
rows, often right next roads and highways.

    Good move.

"Property taxes paid by the median household, by county"
    paid-by-the- median-household-by-county/>
In 2022, Dane County had the highest median tax rate in
    Wisconsin, for
    residential property, at $6,103/yr.

Yep, that's no secret in Wisconsin.

Around here your typical house worth $250,000 to $350,000
will cost between $6300 and up to $8400 a year. That is a
huge chunk of change for a house. Running those values in
other states can be eye opening.

I just looked up a house that recently sold around where I
ride my Trike. The house value on Zillow is $598,000 and the
current taxes are $13,000 a year. That is nuts and
ridiculous because if you own the place is cost over $1000 a
month not counting any utilities or house insurance. Add
house insurance of about $2500 year you are looking a a
serious payment even if you own the house. Granted it is a
nice house better than most but not some wealthy castle. An
upper middle class home and not within driving distance of
any mountain view or ocean. The winters are cold and damp,
the summer is hot and humid, and the wind blows a lot. Your
subdivision sits on a flat piece of ground and you are
surrounded by nothing but Corn and Bean fields when you
    drive out.

    It's complex.

Agricultural land is taxed at a much lower rate. So someone
    has to pay more.

And if you notice in the detail in your tax bill, the bulk
of the revenue goes to your local school system. Some are
ridiculously inept while yet shamelessly profligate while
    others are less horrible.

Would appear that property tax, in the US is quite a bit higher than the
very rough equivalent in uk, aka Council Tax, presumably states have less
other forms of income, as UK does have higher taxes in general vs US.

Does seem to be potentially forcing older retirees to downsize and move to places with much lower rates, and presumably meaning folks loose social connections and any support they may need.

When I was young (Rock County), men would drive a hundred
miles and more north to hunt deer in the fall. Now deer have
infested corn country. And venison tastes much better now...

The hunters I knew back then (I lived in Rock County 1963-1970) didn't
need to go north because there was a lot of deer in southern Wisconsin
    back then, too.

...and yes, corn fed venison tastes much better than pine/spruce fed
    venison.
