I had the distinct privilege of spending two weeks in
mainland China in 2017. Very interesting, eye opening,
pleasant, and informative. There is no doubt, they have
made massive gains in feeding, transporting, clothing,
and housing their population. They made sure to
transport us by rail, plane (still Boeing & Airbus),
bus on new freeways, and boat.

    -------------------------
The reforms Lenin made when by-the-book Communism led to starvation had the potential to do the same for Russia but the combination of his strokes, incompetent managers and loyalty to Marxist dogma undermined them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Economic_Policy
"Lenin characterized the NEP in 1922 as an economic system that would
include "a free market and capitalism, both subject to state control", while socialized state enterprises would operate on "a profit basis".

Stalin was unsuccessful at implementing them and tried to modernize through threats and repression instead, which China repeated and failed at. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Leap_Forward

China has a long history of rising to greatness and then collapsing.

Those are all very vague adjectives to describe the Chinese experience.
You wish you went to Japan instead, right? Darling, you're living in the

I did get to experience Japan, and many other exciting
places in 1972 during my all expenses paid grand tour
of South East Asia scheduelled by the USMC
(was that Uncle Sam's Misguided Children ?
or United States Marine Corps ? )

Anyway, I've heard from plenty about what Japan
is like. I've chosen plenty of other places lately.

Don't choose Cuba. Communist mismanagement is so inept they are losing the ability to do even the simple things. https://havanatimes.org/features/cubas-scarce-electricity-hobbles-the-few-industries-left/

Don't they have the sun and wind that we are supposed to switch to?

Japan is a small country which means it can change its mind swiftly
enough. I don't hold wwii against them, although I am concerned about
Asian superpower involvement in the Vietnam War.

At that time I was enjoying visiting field sites in the German countryside, which is quite pleasant IF you pass the driving test and speak their
language; English was common only in cities. Otherwise few of us liked it,
and being dismissed or ignored as non English speakers are in the US.
