A teenage driver caught going 176 mph on Interstate 5 south of Portland
has been slapped with a $1,000 fine and a license suspension after
spending the night in jail, authorities said Wednesday.

Washington County sheriffrCOs deputies clocked Milo Schneider, 19, of Tualatin, driving nearly triple the speed limit on southbound I-5 just
after midnight Wednesday, Sgt. Danny DiPietro said.

rCLIn my 15-year career, IrCOve never seen a speed this high anywhere,rCY DiPietro said, describing the leadfoot behavior as extremely unsafe.

rCLWhen yourCOre going at that speed, yourCOre going to hit something and someonerCOs going to die,rCY he said.

DiPietro said Schneider was booked into the county jail on one count of reckless driving and has since been released. Anyone caught speeding
above 100 mph faces an automatic $1,100 fine and a six-month suspension
    of their license, DiPietro said.

In this case, a patrol deputy broadcast a description of a blue 2016 BMW
M3 after measuring the speed of the sedan on I-5 near Oregon 217, south
of Portland, according to the sheriffrCOs office. Another deputy spotted
the sedan leave the interstate at Nyberg Street, then both deputies rCLpinnedrCY the sports car while it was stopped at the off-ramp to prevent the driver from leaving.

rCLYou might be able to outrun our cars, but yourCOre never going to outrun our radios,rCY DiPietro said.

Schneider told deputies he had pushed the speedometer up to 183 mph at
one point during the drive, according to the sheriffrCOs office.

The teenager did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

They use a stopwatch to measure the time it took to get from point A
    to point B.

Often times during the day that is done by an airplane.
But this was after midnight and I doubt Oregon State Patrol
    does that then.

In another article of this, they say it was done by LIDAR
(somewhat similar to radar). Hmm, perhaps if they were
already set up and working. ....

I asked in a Facebook group of my racing club, and the responses
    included:

    Michael ---
    Definitely plausible

    Greg A----
The S55 engine in that car can easily be tuned to 550 hp and 550 ft lbs
at the wheels. North of 700 with more modifications. Then it just comes
down to gearing. ItrCOs certainly possible if gearing allows it.

    Greg H----
I have driven my 2015 BMW M3 on the Autobahn at 166 mph and that was
when the limiter kicked in. Even stock it had plenty more pull left.

    OK.....
