Brawn: Bottas left Russell rCynowhere to gorCO in Imola crash
by Fergal Walsh 1 hour ago 0

Formula 1 Managing Director Ross Brawn believes Valtteri Bottas left
George Russell rCLnowhere to gorCY before their clash at Imola on Sunday.

Both drivers were eliminated from the race in the violent impact at Turn
2, with both men blaming each other for the collision.

Russell was attempting to overtake Bottas for ninth place on the road,
but claims the Finnish driver changed his position on the run into the
corner, which ultimately resulted in Russell losing control after he
    touched the grass.

Bottas affirmed that he always left enough space for a car on the
    outside line.

A stewardsrCO investigation followed, but no punishment was handed out as
they deemed the crash a racing incident.

Writing in post-race column, Brawn indicated that Bottas was more to
blame for the accident as he left Russell with little room at the high
    speed section of the track.

rCLThere will no doubt be an intense post-mortem of the accident between Valtteri Bottas and George Russell,rCY Brawn said.

rCLThe positive thing is that both drivers escaped unhurt and the cars
held up on impact to show how far werCOve come regarding the safety standards.

rCLImola is quite a narrow track so thererCOs not much space. When you add
wet grass either side from the rain, it becomes very, very tricky.

rCLIrCOm sure both drivers will analyse the incident and learn from it but
it did look like Valtteri drifted across and left George nowhere to go.rCY

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff refused to pin blame on a single driver,
but stated that Russell, who is managed by Mercedes, has rCLlots to learnrCY.

I think this is racing incident for me.

Yes: Bottas moves a little to the right as the pass the gentle bend in
the track, but he pretty much has to do so. On a drying track, on
slicks, it would be extremely dangerous to try and tighten your line and
thus leave the driest part of the track.

And Russell's decision to try to overtake on what was going to be a
wetter part of the track just wasn't very well considered. If you slow
down the video, you can see and hear that his rear tires clearly lose
grip BEFORE he gets onto the grass:

    <https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.russell-accuses-bottas-of-breaking-gentlemans-agreement-over-crash-as-finn.3Yt16bd4Z6cEqVb0mNq25B.html>

Was he entitled to try it? Sure. But if he had that much pace advantage
over Bottas, he could have waited a little bit for conditions to improve.

What would the stewards know anyway .

Writing in post-race column, Brawn indicated that Bottas was more to

    speed section of the track.

    Why would he ?

rCLThere will no doubt be an intense post-mortem of the accident between Valtteri Bottas and George Russell,rCY Brawn said.

No, because if was pretty straightforward.

rCLThe positive thing is that both drivers escaped unhurt and the cars
held up on impact to show how far werCOve come regarding the safety standards.

Incredible that only 'injury' was Bottas being 'winded' for a period.

rCLImola is quite a narrow track so thererCOs not much space. When you add wet grass either side from the rain, it becomes very, very tricky.

That's something for RUS presumably has now learnt.

Yep. That is how you defend your position.

Like "another car isn't going to make it easy for me".
