Memories of the Nostalgic Formula 1 (From 60's-90's)
Dino Michael
If 'only' he wasn't #2 to Fangio.
How can this great man never be a WDC? 16 wins I think.
To the question, How could Moss never have won the WDC? I think the
best answer is times had changed, and his romantic self run show, did
not fit with the factory teams. They wanted a driver who would be loyal
to the team and to them. Jack Brabham was loyal to John Cooper and to
Cooper cars. Both Phil Hill and Von Tripps were loyal to Ferrari.
Graham Hill was loyal to BRM. Colin Chapman finally found Jim Clark
who would be loyal. Stirling Moss was smart, but way too often thought
he was better at every decision, than any team could be. He had
alienated every team owner/manager. From 1957 on, he never drove the
same make of car for the full season. Also, he put too much importance
on winning and not enough on scoring WDC points with a 2nd or a 3rd.
