For those like me who are wondering why CBS is airing men's
college basketball instead of soaps. Here's an excerpt of an
article published by AP on March 16, 2021: https://apnews.com/article/nba-basketball-coronavirus-pandemic-mens-basketball-mens-college-basketball-9b76df3406b8e82cf31a109bcb298c4b
"...John Bogusz, CBSrCO Executive Vice President of Sports Sales
and Marketing, said last week that only a couple of ad spots are
available for the entire three weeks. He also pointed out that 90%
of advertisers have returned from last year. In 2020, sales were
sold out going into the tournament before it was the first major
event cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
It is expected that this yearrCOs event will surpass the $910 million in spending by advertisers two years ago. According to the NCAArCOs
most recent audited financial statement, CBS and Turner are paying
a combined $850 million to carry this yearrCOs tournament. That might
be considered a bargain considering that CBSrCO current deal with the
NFL averages $1 billion per season through 2022.
CBS and TurnerrCOs original contract with the NCAA was for 14 years at
$10.8 billion (average $770 million per year). They signed an eight-year extension in 2016 that gives them the rights through 2032. The per year
average will jump to $1.1 billion beginning in 2025...
