I don't know how many people watched S*W*A*T (which I'm going to write
as SWAT from here on out) - I'm referring mostly to the reboot starring
Shemar Moore rather the original - but the spinoff finally began airing
last night so I gave it a watch.
I realize that the reboot was NOT particularly accurate given that real
SWAT officers don't work cases and the spinoff continues that
inaccuracy. I really like shows that depict things accurately but
despite that, I always found the show watchable; I guess a good action
show is enough for me sometimes.
The spinoff has a decidedly darker tone to it than the reboot. Hondo got
hung out to dry by his department and was actually working security for
a tech bro he hated as the episode begins. He's divorced and only seeing
his daughter occasionally. But Hicks contacts him and persuades him to
lead a new team in an attempt to save a SWAT organization that is in
strong disfavour with the politicians. The new team is portrayed as
misfits but by the end of the first episode, Hondo has them working
together well enough to end the episode's case satisfactorily. But all
is not well because we learn that one of the new team members is a mole dedicated to destroying SWAT.
That's all the spoiling I'm willing to do; I don't want to ruin the
whole thing for anyone thinking about watching it. In any case, most of
what I said is in the trailer.
Suffice it to say that the show is still watchable, at least to me, so
I'll stick with it a bit longer.
