• [OT] Synagogue shooter may not be Muslim

The man who was attacking a synagogue in Belleville, Ontario on Yom
Kippur this year may not have been a Muslim.

He's been identified as Sean Ward. I would have bet that at least one of
his names was going to be Mohammed. Of course that doesn't preclude a
recent convert to the Religion of Pieces: we had a guy in Strathroy,
Ontario intercepted by police as he was leaving his house with bombs who didn't have "Mohammed" as any of his names either but he was a recent
convert to Islam and had announced plans to blow things up in Toronto.
(His threats were detected by the FBI who notified our law enforcement,
who shot him dead on his own driveway when he wouldn't surrender.)

It turns out the shooter is a former soldier in the Canadian Armed
Forces and lived locally. Police are searching his home, presumably for
clues into his motivations. I suppose authorities will be desperate to
find Nazi paraphernalia so they can reassure people that Islam had
    nothing to do with it.

It was sickening of the CBC to raise the possibility that maybe the
synagogue was not the shooters real target. I think they're preparing
for a narrative that says it was all just a coincidence, that his target
was something else near the synagogue but that we're just jumping to conclusions about his motive.

Both the suspect and the injured officer remain alive with the officer
with his condition upgraded to stable and the shooter still in life-threatening condition.

The SIU has deemed it a terrorist attack on the basis of common sense
but is going to leave it to local police to determine the motive for the shooting. (The SIU is the Special Investigations Unit which gets
involved whenever there is an officer-involved shooting but whose
mandate does not include solving the crime.) Belleville's not a terribly
large city so I'd be surprised if they even had a Homicide unit; they
probably have something like a Major Crimes unit. (I believe that's how
my Region, which is considerably larger, handles such things.) I expect
other expertise will be available from other departments if needed.

Security near other synagogues in Ottawa, Toronto and other places is
being stepped up in the wake of the events in Belleville. I wonder if
they'll be stepped up near the mosques, churches and Hindu temples too,
just to show equal treatment to all the faiths....

    [snip of Rhino's update]

    Thanks.

I'm here on the other side of the GREAT Gordie Howe Bridge
so have to rely on the limited Internet coverage, but I've
been quite pissed at how little has been reported bout
    the shooter.

Ok, he might "just" be a psycho (that is, alas, a real issue),
or, well, this and that. But if we (thatis, also, alas, a
real issue internationally) still had a Fourth Estate with
resources, a lot of those details would be splashed across
    the front pages.

Even the Jewish media has been extremely thin on details.

Oh, I've got to say (sarcasm alert) I love the news reports
that claimed there was no indication of any damage to the
synagogue when... there are pictures of bullet holes in
    the stained glass windowns...

    Thanks again.

(yes, I'm well aware of Canadian "gag orders on the media"
but even if they were in place, more info shuld be there.
I recall the Homolka-Teal garbage all too well, including
how there were US based "ftp" sites with details..)

ahhhhhh, some more info, including that the (alleged) shooter
has been in Canada's military (what?!, Canada has armed forces?!!?!!),
and also has a picture of him:

I'm surprised at that. Isn't the media's mantra "if it bleeds, it
leads"? Both the shooter and one of the officers on scene (apparently, a second officer also fired but wasn't hit himself) were hit and must
    surely have bled....).

Perhaps it's gotten light coverage because Belleville is - relatively
speaking - a media backwater and there is expense at getting crews to Belleville, even though it is close to the 401 and only a couple of
    hours from Toronto and Ottawa.

By the way, have you used the bridge since it came online? I know it
hasn't been open very long so I'll be a bit surprised if you have ;-)

That surprises me even more. I would have thought Jews would have been especially sensitive to this event and eager to inform one another of
    what is known. >

The only video I've seen of damage was several bullet holes in a black
pickup truck, presumably the shooters, which implies that he was noticed
by police immediately as he got out of the truck. Then again, I haven't
    seen every story.

    Thanks again.

I'm happy to help, especially if there is a dearth of info on your side
    of the border.

I don't know what happens if you go to news.google.ca: maybe you'll get
the same feed I do. Or more likely it will redirect you to
news.google.com and give you US news. It might be worth a try just to
see if you get more Canadian news. There's quite a bit of coverage here.
Or just go directly to the websites of CBC, CTV, Global, National Post,
etc. (I can get you URLs if you need them.)

You might find this interesting. One of our Parliamentarians posted a statement of regret in X with the standard sentiments expressed but,
because she's apparently Muslim (she was born in the UK but is of
Pakistani heritage), the responses are distinctly skeptical of her
    sincerity, to say the least:

Muslims are only the most prominent of the anti-Semites these days. A
whole lot of categories of people hate the Jews these days, many of them stirred up by the Iranian theocracy, but there are plenty of others.
