As the United States switched to popular election of senators in the
distant past, I never considered how it might have led to further
consolidation of power in the national government at the expense of the
states, contrary to federalism. Is this truly illibersal? It's not like government at any level enthusiastically guarantees that the people
enjoy liberty in a republican form of government.
